Yep, apparently no partial updates, so no broken packages. It is set up so either the update completes as it should, or it automatically rolls you back to the last good configuration.
Would you still use Aeryn OS even if it was made immutable (which is what the developers are planning)?
Dosen't scare me. It makes it more secure. So if you have alter something it's going to be $user, which is also recommended on all distroes.
I've never used an immutable distribution before. Doesn't that come with a lot of limitations? I often need to do things that require sudo privileges. Would that mean that you can't change things in /root?
A typical user should never messing with /root and only do stuff in /home. By making /root immutable you avoid mistakes or malicious stuff altering your system. That's why $user have ./config ./local/share etc. in the /home so if you want altering something you put it there instead of altering /root. IF you get hit by malious stuff in your /home you can always wipe $user but still keep the system intact.
When Zorin would be immutable you would not be able to edit e.g. /etc/default/grub to display the grub menu during boot or to disable snapd services or to make changes in the gtk Zorin themes wich are not affected by gtk.css files in ~/.config.
Is that easier in Aeryn OS and can that be controlled from home directory?
I'm not sure, because I haven't tried immutable system. As for now it's hypothetical.
But I'm going to try stuff when it gets there.
It would be interesting to know whether immutable distributions offer more customizable user settings in that regard
to make up for that.
For example, I couldnāt live with a system where I couldnāt even specify what happens when I close the laptop lid, or where I no longer had the freedom to use only the software packages I want (and remove others entirely). Thatās why what Aeryn OS is planning sounds pretty off-putting to me.
You can still remove/install things to you likening in an immutable system. You can can't just alter them in /root.
But I think the devs can answer your questions better than me. We're haning out at: Zulip chat - Community | AerynOS
In terms of rolling release, never had an issue with Q4OS. Rock solid Plasma.
I don't mind a rolling release as long as it rolls both ways.
