After update, WiFi, lan, bluetooth, cardreader, screen brightness not working anymore

Hi There,

After restarting my laptop with Zorin OS 18.1 Core (dual-boot with Windows 11), my WiFi, lan, bluetooth, cardreader and screen brightness controls aren't working anymore. (Maybe also other functions which I haven't notices yet). My laptop also seems to be a bit slower.

The first thing I did was checking if my Windows 11 install had the same problem, but all works fine in Win11, so I can rule out that there's a hardware problem.

The next thing I did, was checking /var/log/apt/history.log (see below). You can see that after I didn't use my laptop for almost 2 weeks, the first update was libavahi-common-data, which succeeded. But the next updates all returned "/usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (1)", so I guess one of those updates broke the system.

Annoyingly, the laptop can't connect to the internet anymore, so it's not possible to download any new updates.

How can I (offline) revert back to the state on 2026-05-08?

In Windows OS > Control Panel > Power settings
Is Fast startup Disabled? It must be disabled. "Fast startup" is not a boot option. It is just hibernate, so leaving it enabled leaves Windows OS holding onto hardware - if you then Boot into Zorin OS, Windows is still controlling that hardware keeping Zorin OS locked out from it.

In your EFI Settings (BIOS settings) is Secure Boot enabled or disabled?

From your Grub Menu (Where you select Zorin OS or Windows OS), if you select Advanced Options for Zorin, you will see Zorin on... followed by a kernel number.
Try Selecting an Earlier kernel, but not (Recovery) to see if the previous kernel boots Zorin OS with everything working.

Fast Startup and secure Boot were already disabled, but selecting a previous kernel did the trick!

(Sidenote: I also tried that yesterday, but it didn't work because apparently grub is a bit messed up on my system. When I reboot from the UEFI settings, I get an old grub startup menu with items from a previous Fedora install. But now I figured out that when I first shut down the system and then select Advanced Options for Zorin, the right items are shown.)

You can set that older kernel to boot by default if you want to, avoiding the extra steps of selecting it at every boot.
