Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Issues, and suggestions for new comers (Steam / GRUB)

Hello, :waving_hand:t2:

I recently installed Zorin OS 18 Core on my desktop PC, and I wanted to share a few observations and suggestions based on my experience.

Everything worked great out of the box, but I noticed something during installation.

:small_blue_diamond: INSTALLATION

In my setup, I have two drives:

A 1 TB SSD with Windows 11 Home, and a 4 TB empty SSD intended for Zorin OS.

During installation, the option “Install Zorin OS alongside Windows” only appeared for the 1 TB Windows drive and not for the empty 4 TB one.

I manually created a GPT partition table on the 4 TB SSD, after which the installer asked whether I wanted to format and automatically configure "nvme0n1p1". It then correctly installed Zorin OS next to Windows, but the process wasn’t entirely clear.

Since I’m fairly experienced with Linux and Windows, I understood what was happening, but for less advanced users, this step could be confusing.

It would be great if the installer automatically recognized and suggested empty drives as valid options in the “Install alongside Windows” interface. I believe that would make the process far more intuitive for new comers. :slightly_smiling_face:

:antenna_bars: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Issues

Aside from installation, I unfortunately encountered serious issues with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi performance, which eventually led me to stop using Zorin OS.

Two specific examples:

  • When playing games, I use a Bluetooth speaker for better sound quality than my monitor speakers. However, there was a noticeable delay (about 0.5–1 second), which made gaming unpleasant.
  • I also use a Bluetooth mouse, and whenever I opened apps or performed quick actions, the mouse cursor would stutter or jump, which was quite frustrating.
My Wi-Fi connection also disconnected intermittently, with no clear reason.

For reference, Secure Boot was disabled, as the Zorin OS website mentions it may cause compatibility issues with certain drivers or hardware.
All system updates were fully installed, and no additional drivers were listed in the update manager.

:video_game: Steam Flatpak Limitation

Another minor issue: the Flatpak version of Steam cannot add games directly to the desktop. It’s a small detail, but for many players this is an essential and convenient feature.

:gear: GRUB Configuration

It would be great to have a built-in GUI tool in Zorin OS to configure the GRUB.
Even a simple interface to change the boot order, adjust the timeout, or reset GRUB to its default state would make system management much easier and more accessible.

:gear: Hardware Information

Motherboard: GIGABYTE X870I AORUS PRO ICE (rev 1.0)
Wi-Fi chip: Realtek 8922AE (Wi-Fi 7)
SSD: KINGSPEC XG7000
OS version: Zorin SO Core 18
Mouse: Keychron M3
Speaker: JBL GO 4
Keyboard: Keychron V5 Max

I really hope this feedback helps the Zorin OS team identify what’s causing these issues.
If the wireless problems are resolved, I’d gladly consider switching back to Zorin OS. Curently, reliable wireless connectivity is essential in my setup, and it’s the only thing holding me back for now, as I would really like to ditch Windows once and for all. :slightly_smiling_face:

Welcome to the Forum!

Instead of the Steam Flatpak, You can use the .deb Version from the Repo's or download it directly from Steam to avoid Flatpak-related Issues:

For GRUB Configuration, Linux Mint presents a graphical Tool which will come with a future Update. Maybe this is something for You. As an Alternative, there would be the GRUB Customizer.

Because of Your Wifi/Bluetooth Issues: Did You take a Look at the ''Additional Drivers'' Tab in Software & Updates if there is a Driver offered? Does Your System run in Wayland or X11? Can You post the Output of sudo lshw -C network and rfkill list please?
