Well I tried ...... $ sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment ...... from the Ubuntu 20.04 instructions and sudo apt install cinnamon ..... but neither one appear to have worked ..... it doesn't show up in my login drop down list but does appear in my Zorin Main Menu .....
But clicking on that just causes it to disappear with no results ....
Oh well I'll wait until someone comes along to give me a hand .....
I thought you had it installed already? If you upgraded Lite to Pro Lite, that wouldn't have removed cinnamon.
No I was just using Xfce with Lite and Lite Pro ..... only 16.3 Pro had Cinnamon installed .... it maybe using Lite Pro now but I have no way of knowing ....
I'm back on Cinnamon but I think it is 16.3 or at least that is what neofetch says .... but then I think you told me that neofetch can't distinguish between the versions of Zorin ....
One way I could tell for sure is if I knew a program that was installed only on Lite Pro and no where else .....
What would happen if I deleted Cinnamon ..... went to Pro Lite and reinstalled it there .... it should stay on Pro Lite right ????? ....
If you ran
sudo apt install cinnamon cinnamon-core
Or
sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment
then it should show at the Login Chooser
I have Cinnamon in Login Chooser ..... and I have chosen it now and Cinnamon is running but is it running on Zorin Core 16.3 Pro or Zorin Pro Lite ..... or does it matter ????? .....
It does not matter; they are not running concurrently. Nor on top of each other. It is just a different desktop environment that gets initialized.
You know this is getting very confusing for me ..... I'm to the point of just wiping this drive and installing just Zorin Pro lite and Cinnamon .... I have just to many variables to have to contend with especially with Zorin 17 coming up .....
Can I just wipe the drive and use the new Zorin updater to install Pro Lite .... I assume I will need to set up my hard drive like I did before I installed Zorin Core the first time plus copy all the folders and data I want to save and reinstall ..... I can't really use any back-ups or I would install all that garbage I already installed again ....
God what a mess ..... but then I made it .....
No, the upgrader can upgrade an existing install only.
If you want to wipe and reload, you will need a LiveUSB.
I think a fresh start could do you good, though...
Is there anyway to just delete Zorin Core Pro ???? ..... and still leave Zorin Pro Lite ..... or are they all inter twined .... I guess maybe not it seems like everything was built off my original Zorin Core and everything else was just added on to it ....
Oh well I got 2 years of material to think about possible loosing or dumping ..... very hard decision to make ....
Thanks for all your help ....
Yes, you can.
sudo apt remove zorin-os-desktop gnome
Done ..... now if you would be so kind as to give me the path to remove the extra icons from my Login Chooser again .... I can find the post it was in ....
As I have an old Zorin Xfce DE on my Login Chooser can I remove that also with the same command just put Xfce instead of gnome ????? .....
You cannot, as removing XFCE will remove the desktop environment.
But you can remove it from the desktop choices.
Rats ..... it won't let me delete any of these .... delete is grayed out ..... I think I tried that last with the same results ....
Elevate to Root, first
sudo -i
nemo
Navigate to /usr/share/xsessions
Once again you fixed what was broken and I thank you very much .... it helps a whole bunch just not seeing them in the Login Choosers .... not sure just why I have 2 versions of Gnome showing as it only shows one icon but it is a whole lot better that the 9 entries before .....
Thanks again
Check if you have a /usr/share/wayland
directory. It may contain one of those Gnome entries as a .desktop file as well.
You can remove that one, as well.
