Corrupt grub bootloader?

I have been running Linux Mint - installed on a 500gb ssd. I decided to try.compare with Zorin. I created a live distro on a thumb drive and installed Zorin on a separate external 500GB ssd. When I rebooted, the boot menu was changed [ expected] with a choice of Zorin [ first choice ] and Mint cinnamon. I used both systems for an hour restarting when I wanted to change without problems. Then closed the system down. When I returned and switched on, all I get for a boot menu is a terminal screen with grub on it. I cannot see what has changed. Can I repair the boot menu from a live disk? NB If I change the order of boot from the BIOS i CAN load Mint. so all is not lost, but I really don't want to have to go into the bios every time I boot my computer
thanks
