DE change without breaking system

Hello zoriners!!
I was wondering if it is possible to change DE without breaking the system. I mainly use Zorin Core, but I'm thinking of changing to XFCE, but I don't want to reinstall the OS, given the fact that I'm not really good at making multiple backups and I have really important files in my laptop. Although it handles Gnome well, I want to give a try to XFCE as a daily DE. Is there a way to do it?

Can be easily done and there are several threads right in this forum on how to do it.

I am using Cinnamon and have been since I started since I hate Gnome. It hasn't broken anything. That is old school thinking in that it breaks the system, it hasn't done that in over a decade.
