post here was wrong code; deleted

There is an attachment facility. 7th tool from left on the Reply box toolbar labelled "Upload" when you hover over

Lets try something very easy first: how old or fresh (new) are your RAM-banks ?
And more: how much RAM is vacant in your system (total amount) ?

Has this device a history with an 'old Windows' before you jumped over to Zorin ?

Mem: total 16086100 used: 1729792 free:11574248 shared: 130428
buffer/cache : 2782060 available:13903260

Computer is dual-booted with windows; Windows10 is on the SSD and Zorin was installed fresh on an internal terabyte drive. At the time of buying the computer (2020), Windows was used briefly for a couple of weeks before Zorin was installed on the separate drive.
In answer to Zabadabadoo, looks like the upload only applies to images, not text files.

I think https://pastebin.com/ has been used for text files by some.

Thanks for that; never heard of it (suppose not, I'm not really a programmer).
Anyway, I've tried it and it works, here is the output in response to the earlier suggestion of application logs:

We can rule of course that amount of RAM out as being too low. There is just one thing left we need to know as well and that is all about your CPU (and GPU ) can you do a copy/ paste of the +- 10 first lines of this command:

lscpu

(scroll a bit up in the output of that command).

You could install Stacer. It is great at cleaning dross from the system. Yesterday I wiped 1.5 Gb of Application cached data.

Specs and stats on the machine all look great.
You say software is up to date.
Two more things to check - I realize this is a 2020 machine but... How much dust is clogging the air out/inlets?
Have these been cleaned? Have you used a thermal monitoring app to actively monitor temps (I use conky but you can use a windowed app like psensor or hardinfo or the terminal.)
You may have a GPU or CPU overheating issue. Also be sure, if this is a notebook computer, that it is placed in a well ventilated position, not on a soft surface or blanket.

And on GPU - what graphics are you using?

sudo lshw -C video

It was cleaned out a while back; about a couple of months---it's a tower desktop---but I guess I can take another look, although with things going on here tonight it'll have to be a job for tomorrow.
The only direct measurement I have at the moment is via the Disks app, which says the hard drive is running at 35degrees C. I don't have another temperature-monitoring application.
Here is the data from the graphics command:

Have you tested using the proprietary (ugh lol) driver for the Nvidia card?
I am using it, myself.
Open Software & Updates, then the additional Drivers tab to see and change the drivers you are using for Nvidia.

Finally found them....but which is the right one to use?

You can use any of them, as they are offered. I would stick with the Non-Server ones, though.
You can test each and see which one gives the best performance. I would personally start with the 515 (bottom of the list) as it is the one I have the most confidence in.

Great; I will set that up and try 515 first. It'll take a while to get some results, so I shall bail out for this evening and thank you all for the input so far. Will then see how things go, and through part of tomorrow, before returning here.

Well, that was scarey. Found and switched to the 515 last night.
This morning, couldn't boot into Zorin from the grub menu at all....blank screen. Spent an hour online on another machine, looking for ideas; finally got back in (by sheer luck) through the Zorin advanced options...hoping initially to find a safe startmode in the menu, but there isn't one; then opted to boot normally from that same menu and fortunately it brought me back to normal operation and desktop. Have now switched back to the non-proprietary driver....for now.
I think I'll have another go at this when I've recovered my nerves.
P.S no serious dust inside the computer

Sad news ...... but do not use the bottom of the list driver but more like the top of the list lol ...... It says clearly TESTED in the side comments.

So top of the list the first driver that says TESTED you need to install and try (the others are alternatives, non tested at all lol)

I really never understood Ubuntu and these kind of lists in the extra drivers .... but some say it is for having an alternative should the first one not work for some reason. Lucky my nouveau driver on my 'old Dell' works perfectly.

Actually... the "Tested" drivers are the ones that give the most trouble.
I recommend avoiding the "tested" ones as that name is quite misleading.

Did you try adding the nomodeset parameter to grub? It's as easy as adding it, running update-grub and then rebooting.
You did not need to spend an hour searching - just ask here on the forum - that is why we are here. We would have guided you to the recovery menu right away so that you would be less stressed.

Regret that although I was online on a spare laptop, broadband connection wasn't very good and I couldnt get the Zorin forum to load properly until late morning, which is when I posted.
I only learned afterwards about the nomodeset....picked it up on ItsFOSS; but took the opportunity to print the instructions off.
Now that I've got those details, I can carefully try again with another driver...probably not tonight, but when I get a spare couple of hours in the coming few days.
(There's one positive thing about having problems, and that is, you get to find out more about how the OS works  )
