So, I just recently moved from windows. I am used to being able to make desktop shortcuts, and making files (for example, like making a blank text file) by right clicking. Doesnt really seem to work on linux tho. I know you an make desktop shortcuts, but it is only working on the regular zorin menu. (I use arc menu, and its frustrating turning on the zorin menu everytime i want to make a shortcut.
Also, I recently downloaded balena etcher, and it came in the form of a compressed zip file. i unzipped it, and a file folder appeared. then, i had to open it, and click on the gear icon thing to launch. Is there anyway to make it into a "app" that we can acess from the menu? I know there are alternatives as going through the software shop, but i have some exclusive software in the form of this "file" thing as well.
Open your filemanager. Open your home directory. There is a folder "templates". There are already templates for libre office and an empty text file, but you can add own ones, e.g. for open office. Create an empty file and name it accordingly and put the correct file ending.
All these templates are shown in the right-click menu.
Packages add to menu:
I'm not sure which package format balena is.
.deb packages often add a launcher to start menu. Sometimes it is needed to logout and login again so that they appear in the start menu.
Appimages you can manage e.g. with a program AppImageLauncher. It creates entries to startmenu. Or you can create your own desktop file.
Right click on the Z icon in taskbar -> Edit menu -> Select a category where you want to add the app -> Click Add new item
In the Name field fill as you wish, and in the command field choose Browse and navigate to the directory where your file is located (the one which you use to lunch the program). Also choose an appropriate icon and save it. Now the app should appear in the app menu.
Hm, templates are missing.
You could try to create a new folder "Templates" and put an empty libre office writer, calc, impress, draw document there and an empty text file.
So it looks normal (in German language)
I've never done this but libre office and a texteditor are installed, so open the four libre office programs, create a new file, name it as shown on the screenshot and save it at /home/USERNAME/Templates (replace USERNAME with your username). Do the same with texteditor.
Okay, then You have to create it the Folder new. It should come by default but maybe it was deleted accidentially.
Like @Forpli already wrote, You can create the Folder in home and then put the blank Files in there with a Name and the File Ending like You see it on the linked Comment in @Forpli's Comment.
You can name the Files like You wat but the File Endings have to fit to the actual File - that is important.
Your question about whether it is possible to add shortcuts to the desktop using the Arc menu has been on my mind since you have asked this question, as it also bothers me when I have to make the Zorin menu visible for this purpose, which I don't normally use. Now I have found a solution for this:
Install the gnome extension "Desktop Icons NG (DING)" and make sure that it is enabled. Then the option "Create a desktop shortcut" (or to remove the desktop shortcut when there is already one) will also be displayed in the right-click menu.
After adding the desktop shortcut, right-click on the icon on the desktop and select "allow launching."
