Disappointed in the Zorin Group (web apps)

I don't get why @AZorin and @zorink haven't addressed this. Really wish they would.

Out of curiosity I looked at both Zorin Connect's and KDE Connect's GitHub pages and this is what I found in the summary regarding contributors and the programming languages used:

Every Windows tech savvy person who comes to Linux sounds like this. It's like a kid who needs attention from daddy but daddy is working all the hours to pay the rent, buy the food and keep the lights on. I don't understand why you keep complaining you said you don't use zorin anymore. Support Pro, don't support Pro. Whatever but pls, I do not see so many of the bugs you keep complaining about. And why keep making new posts about the same complaning. AppleMac is good, so they say but I think there is no Pro version for 50 dollars.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Thank you for sharing.

Because... the complaints @Omnimaxus makes are legitimate and deserve attention. Repetition is irritating but irritation is also a means of drawing attention. They might respond just to make him go away!

This video was posted 6 days ago.

Artyom Zorin, co-founder and lead developer of Zorin OS in the video at 13:42 secs mentions that Zorin listens to their users and their feedback to make the desktop even better. He also mentions when wanting to take Zorin into another direction he has to take into account what the users want. Making sure that their interests and their needs are North Star.

That is stated in the video.

So I'm confused in believing that, since I read so many complaints here more so from Staff, about lack of participation from Zorin creators/devs and the direction that Zorin os is taking.

So how do they listen to their users? By just reading what's posted on the forum?

Yeah, I remember this giving me pause too. So general as to give no insight at all, really. "Don't worry, when I take this in another direction I"ll make sure your interests and needs are North Star."

Uh, OK. (Thanks?)

I share in some of these reactions.

Let's cover a few points, though - in order to stay grounded in what we know:

  • The ZorinGroup does follow the Feedback Thread and has implemented a very large number of User Suggestions and requests. This has often been done silently.
  • When the uproar over the Mozilla Changes of Terms Of Service and Privacy Policy hit GnuLinux; the ZorinGroup opened public discussion on the options for a replacement. They detailed the things a browser must have to be a default distro.

The above primarily deals with small implementation. This is... Things like the inclusion of Gnome Extensions, features and Desktop function - along with preinstalled applications.

Large implementation is a bit more restricted. This includes anything to do with Gnome.

  • The Gnome Software Channel is often complained about.
  • That it defaults to Flatpak is an area of large concern.
  • The sunsetting of Lite and sticking Exclusively to Gnome.
  • Wayland being made the default before it was ready.
  • Various feedback over WINE. This one seems tricky.

These are areas where it feels like user feedback paled against the larger GnuLinux Political Arena.

The Direction of Zorin OS is an area that for some of us is a Large Concern. Even as it is intended to appeal to Windows OS migrants; it does so a little too well. Emulating Microsoft behaviors to a point that... Well, what was the point?
If you're going to be locked down and controlled, why bother with the GnuLinux Learning Curve?
I guess, telemetry and privacy are the only remaining reasons. FOSS and Freedom are dying.
And with those gone, when GnuLinux needs funding - what will be left to cut out in spite of the End Users to get that funding?
Privacy.

Just to be clear, community Moderators are not "Staff", they are just users who have acquired high level of trust and invited to be Moderators. The only "Staff" members here are Azorin and zorink.

Part of that confusion may be due to the Discourse Forum software listing us as "Staff" and you can page us all with the @staff tag.

I have not seen that anywhere.

In real life, I pride myself on making a conscious effort to be fair. That said, I will attest that, yes, the Zorin Group does listen to feedback and has shown evidence of implementing said feedback (though not always, and to their own detriment, I believe, and that's on them). For all my past criticisms and feedback re: Zorin OS, that is one thing they do reasonably "OK," and must be given fair credit for.

As I've said before (same for many others), one key thing they really need to do way more of is communication. For example, it'd be nice to hear from them about the multitude of bugs in Zorin OS 18 and why they weren't fixed prior to release (and still haven't been fixed in many cases). Showing that they're listening through actions is nice and all, but public communication and acknowledgement of issues is just as vital (if not more so). Gonna tag them here so they see this and hopefully "get it." All this comes from a good place, and is absolutely well-intentioned.

I hope they see it as such, too. @AZorin @zorink Thank you to all.

Thank you for doing an amazing and incredible job here on the forum! Dedicating your time at our expense to make Zorin a much better experience! :yellow_heart:

Just had to test if it works, eh?

Absolutely. But at the same time that message did come from the heart. :100:
