Hi can files not have a split panel in it our tab, instead of opening two views of it?

The default file manager does have tabs but unfortunately doesn't have the option to create a split on the same window:
You can, however, install another file manager that has this feature. One that I like to use is called Thunar, which is the one that Zorin OS Lite uses:
To install this, launch a terminal and run the following command:
sudo apt install thunar
The unfortunate thing about this is that it uses the same icon as the default manager and it can be confusing. For the time being, I'd suggest giving it a try by launching it manually though the applications menu. If you like this one, we can discuss how to make it the default, or look for alternatives.

Another filemanager which offers this function is nemo. You can install it with
sudo apt install nemo
