A few days ago I noticed something strange while running Zorin 18.1. I found the screen display too much high and wanted to get it darker by typing Fn f5/f6... while the little window with the appropriate cursor was displayed and functionning the screen by itself did not change its display. How come ? Any clue to make it work again ?
As my laptop runs double boot with Windows 10, I checked with Windows... and everything was working fine, so this is not a hardware issue.
Thank you to let me know if this is a bug that has a workaround or going to be fixed.
Does the screen brightness work when you go to quick settings (click on the speaker icon) in the taskbar and move the slider for the brightness?
Is fast startup in Windows power options disabled?
If it was the kernel update to kernel 7.0 that caused the problem, you could test if it helps to boot from the previous kernel. In grub menu during boot select Advanced options for Zorin, and then select an older kernel (not recovery kernel) to boot from and test if it works then.
Are you running on Xorg or Wayland? You could test, if it helps to switch to Xorg if you are running on Wayland.
I also read that it can help to set
acpi_backlight=native
as kernel parameter, but I don't know how to do this with rEFInd.
If those ideas don't help, you could try it with brightnessctl or and gnome extension for the brightness to see if it helps. In this thread you see more informations:
Hi guys, sorry for the late answer to this. I saw elsewhere that there is (was ?) an issue with kernel 7.0. I am now restarting Zorin 18.1 with kernel 16.7 and all functions work fine with it. From my view point this is fixed. I don't know if kernel 7.0 is fixed, I'll try it later, but this is no longer an issue for me with this workaround.
