When I open a desktop folder it stays highlighted (selected) even when I then open a sub folder.
Is there any way to have folders NOT stay selected when I open a sub folder?
I have nearly lost important items because if you then drag and drop any documents or folders to the rubbish bin or to a different folder BOTH the desktop folder and the sub-folder or document are moved there.
I know what you mean and I always override this in my theme creations, since Gnome no longer offers a button selector for this in the Preferences. But the .css will not override the multi-move that you point out as the hazard, only the appearance of the highlighted folders.
Gnome Devs have addressed this, but consider Sticky Selection a feature, not a bug...
Multi-moves due to this can be mitigated by left-clicking any open area in the child folder. This deselects everything, and for me, this motion has become automatic, even in other D.E.'s.
Thanks for the info.
Yes I have been developing a habit of doing just that but it does get annoying and slows the workflow down.
I wonder who actually thought this "sticky selection" thing was a good idea?
P.S. I like the fact you always know the proper terminology for things!
I use Nemo File Manager on Zorin OS Lite. I do not experience this 'feature.'
Gnome did away with Desktop Icons entirely... So this is specific to Gnome and Nautilus.
So, one option might be for you to gravitate to a different desktop environment. For me, this was an unappealing option, but ended up being a major boon as it solved a large volume of the workflow interruptions that I was tolerating.
If you are really happy with How Gnome Operates over-all, the above might not be your solution.
In which case...
Gnome offers no means of disabling their feature.
The only workarounds require a behaviorial change for the user, such as left clicking on open area (Or tapping ctl+shift+a, which is already familiar action for me from using Inkscape, GIMP and others)
Or switching from Double click to Single click in settings, then teaching yourself to single click when opening the launcher.
My best friend is on the cusp of trying Linux. They're at the stage of picking their first distribution to try, and I've been recommending they start with not-GNOME. This made an excellent, practical example of why I'm suggesting Plasma, not pushing them away from others, and actively telling them to avoid GNOME.
Their reaction to this thread was "... WTF."
