Fresh Z18 install, editing taskbar and Files issues

Hey folks,
Just switched from Windows 11. I installed a fresh copy of Zorin18 Core.

I tried to edit the taskbar/Position/ Panel monitor position, but when I clicked the 'top' position of the taskbar, and then clicked 'bottom', the (sorry for the windows term) explorer.exe seem to crash. Mouse worked but I couldn't click anything, alt-tab didn't work, nor the desktop key. Music was still playing (had gnome music open) but nothing was clickable. I proceeded to hard shut off the computer.

I was able to change the taskbar when I tried again, but now 'Files' is not responding and it's not registering clicks for 'Force Quit' or 'Wait', however I can use other programs.
I wasn't really doing anything except using Firefox. Do I need to format and reinstall? Software is updated and only a handful of things are installed, Firefox, Faugus, Steam, and Gnome Music, which are from the Software store.

Specs, if needed, 12th gen intel i9, 3080ti, 128gb ram, ASRock motherboard.
Any help would be great, thanks!

Explorer.exe eh? -chuckle- You mean the integrated Gnome Nautilus (Files) is crashing?
If you are fine with performing a fresh re-install, it is a good first step since a reinstall can do wonders.

I do not see anything in these specs that would cause you any issues.

Hello. I don't get it ; what means "Explorer.exe" ?
Could you please share screenshots ?
How did you installed Zorin ?
Did you installed Nvidia drivers ? How ?
Thanks

@Aravisian I'll try with a re-install, thanks!

@SOZA Sorry, I mean the Gnome Nautilus crashed or just seemed to stop working.
I installed Zorin 18 via USB key with the ISO installed in Mac OS Tahoe with Balena (I believe is the name) to flash the ISO on to the USB key. I chose the 'install with Nvidia drivers' option when installing the OS. When I got into desktop, after the install finished, I checked for updates. It updated the "Upgrade Zorin OS" program and that was it.

I'll re-install the OS and see if the problem persists, thanks!

You can use that, but it's the opinion of a few (or more) to use something else.

When i first tried Zorin18 few days ago, i had "troubles" by choosing the "nvidia option". I then chose normal installation and after the installation completed i installed the drivers. It worked better that way for me but i'm not able to tell why. Just in case ...

Ask to people who maintained this forum because i'm not that sure, but it seems to me that "editing taskbar" and "Files issues" are two separate subjects

''Files'' is the (used) Name of the File Manager Nautilus. Gnome was so smart to use a too-common, irritating Name - even when the Package and the Stuff to it have that Name.

Because of Your Nvidia Card: Does Your System run in Wayland or X11 Mode? You can check that in Settings>System>Info>Systemdetails.

Thanks for the reply. It says X11 in the System Details box.

Word, Money, Paint, Notes, Access... Gnome's naming convention mirrors Microsoft.
Makes me feel like I did not escape.

"Files."
They believe the users are too stupid to recognize the name of an application. Despite we can and do with all the other oddly named applications.

ugh.

I enabled Weyland from the login screen. When I was on X11 (before enabling) I clicked the Zorin logo on the taskbar/ Lock and a black bar got 1/4 way down the screen and the system froze like it did when Gnome Nautilus stopped working. Nothing on the screen was clickable but the mouse still worked.

After enabling Weyland at login, I started to downloading the game Enshrouded on Steam (Steam downloaded from the Software store). It downloaded the Proton packages and I clicked Play. It started to compile shaders. It's slow, about a percent every few minutes. I was distracted on my phone and noticed the monitor turned off. I moved the mouse and the lock screen with my background appeared. I typed the password, it went to a black screen, then the login screen appeared, like after a reboot, with the default Zorin wallpaper. I typed the password and it appears the computer restarted. I've had this PC build for a few years and never experienced any hardware issues. My next step may be installing Zorin without Nvidia drivers and installing them afterwards?

Could be worth a Try. Maybe during the Installation and downloading it, there might be some Interference.

Only one Thing to add for this: When you install without Nvidia Drivers, Zorin will run by default in Wayland. So, when the Installation is done, don't forget to switch to X11/Xorg.

Yes, there are Energy Saving Settings. When You open the Settings and go to Energy(1) and then there on the right Side to Energy Saving(2), You can disable it:
