Holy! Tuxedo OS will switch the System Base from Ubuntu to Debian

Holy. Tuxedo OS is DITCHING Ubuntu! And moving to Debian. Link: A new foundation for TUXEDO OS: Switching to Debian - TUXEDO Computers. If Tuxedo can do it, so can Zorin! Are you listening, @AZorin @zorink ? If Zorin switches AND finally gets serious about fixing bugs, then I will happily switch back and pay for the "pro" version.

I already read about this. We should specify here a bit: Tuxedo will not simply switch to Debian. They will switch to Debian Testing. So, it is not the normal stable Debian Branch. I write that to be clear about that.

In their Blog Entry they explained the Step (increasing Snap, Future AI, Issues with too old Packages etc.). I think that are vaild Points and understandable - and they sell Computers with the System on it. So, they need something that suits to that. Interesting is the Btrfs+Snapper Combination.

As I've read it, I thought, too that Zorin maybe could come with a Switch, too - but then with Debian stable.

P.S.: I changed the Thread Title a bit to make the Topic more clear.

I think this is a great move. I liked Tuxedo OS when I was hopping, but had the same issues I had with Zorin (older kernel than I wanted, older graphics drivers, more severe Wayland issues than I had in non-Ubuntu based distributions). Time will tell how well it turns out in the long run, but if I were ever to go back to a Debian family distribution, I'd very much rather its lineage not run through Ubuntu.

In discussions about potentially moving Zorin to a Debian base, one of the issues brought up has been the loss of the advantages of the things that are ready-built by Ubuntu for Zorin's use, and how much more work that would involve for 2 developers. But for Tuxedo, it might not so much a change in workload as a reallocation of effort.

As Gemini put it:

Tuxedo has chosen to spend their resources on managing upstream integration rather than patching out downstream issues. For a company that builds both hardware and software, this level of vertical control is often worth the engineering cost. They are likely betting that the long-term benefit of a cleaner, more flexible, and more predictable base outweighs the initial high cost of "re-architecting" their build pipelines and support infrastructure."

Well, there is a Point: It is Debian Testing. Security Updates and Fixes are coming there with a Delay because the stable Branch has Priority. Depending how Tuxedo will handle this, it could lead that they have to bring up Patches.

Point here is, Ubuntu is being ditched in favor of Debian. And that in itself is a win for both Debian and users. Screw Ubuntu. I wouldn't mind Ubuntu if it wasn't for their Snap-heavy approach. Go, Debian! Go!

No argument there Omnimaxus! Just don't get your hopes up. The Zorin brothers are notoriously impervious to external input or influence.

I agree 100%. It's like they have disdain for users who genuinely want to see them do better. It's part of why I switched to MX Linux XFCE. The developers there are so invested, and I've even chatted with the lead developer once or twice. I've also donated to MX Linux. Huge contrast with the Zorin Group.

I agree. ZorinOS should switch to Debian stable. I don't agree with Tuxedo's arguments for going with the testing branch.

Agree re: testing. Stable is the way to go.

There are plenty of other decent Debian-based distributions. I could never get Tuxedo OS to install.
My favourite Debian-based distros are Devuan, PCLOS-Debian (neither have systemd), MX-Linux KDE, and Q4OS.
Oh, almost forgot, LMDE 7.

I can understand their Points. They are not simply offer an OS. They offer their Machines with the OS. That is something what shouldn't be underestimated. And they mentioned that the Adjustments for the Desktop because of the Libaries are difficult, too because of the Age.

So, having something that is more on a current Level to suit their Needs for their Business, I can understand. And the Testing Branch isn't directly Bleeding Edge. So, that offers more Stability than the Unstable Branch.

The only Alternative for this would be to use Fedora as Base. But that would go for the Usage a bit too far.

And it's (Fedora) Red Hat, not Debian, and definitely not LTS.

But Tuxedo doesn't want LTS anymore - at least not in the normal Way.

I hope they switch to a stable debian aswell.
Probably just me coming from W11 but getting faster updates would give some rest of mind. Ubuntu updates take ages
