I very much intended it to mean that your search was biased, so you'd get biased results. I don't hold a grudge against you, no worries
An interesting balanced article on Flatpak:
That creased me up Don't you find typing with fingers crossed, especially with legs and toes also crossed a little difficult.
"Front Left", "Front Right" regularly echoes around my home after a Software Update.
There is also some good resources here:
- Desktop Linux Hardening | PrivSec - A practical approach to Privacy and Security
- Linux | Madaidan's Insecurities
These may seem more negative, but they are intended for information on
- The current state of Flatpak and how lots of apps are insecurely packaged with it
- Mitigating a lot of these issues as the end user to improve security
I am very, VERY glad that I've basically never had an audio-related issue ever again since switching to Pipewire + Pipewire-Pulse
Otherwise I would probably be in the same boat
I still prefer ALSA. Think I am going to give Devuan 5.0 a try as they have now removed all remnants of systemd on the KDE platform.
Only now? I've been using Void with Plasma for a while now
No a while back. I found a webpage a while back which listed OS's with remnants of systemd even though they use SysV Init. I really wanted to give Venom Linux and Dragonfly BSD a try as both of them don't have SystemD, but Venom can't be updated and Dragonfly can't cope with wireless keyboard and mice. The only BSD I have had success with is Ghost BSD. Just wish I knew how to use Linux jailbreak on BSD. None of the literature is clear enough for a mere mortal like me to understand.
Out of curiosity, what are the specs of your computer? The lag sounds like a driver issue to me. Either video, Wi-Fi or hard drive. I did an update a couple of days ago and the kernel was upgraded.
openSUSE ran fine, but I had to remove Void Linux, even the latest kernel on Openbox performed horribly.
I re-installed Zorin OS 17.1 and am currently running X11 and dealing with the occasional stutter.
Out of curiosity, what does terminal output of
mutter --version
relay? I have been sifting through the mutter bug reports and have come across interesting things in regards to Mutter43 and stuttering and lag.
Hey, Aravisian, thank you for continuing to look into this. Although I switched back to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, I'm still looking into the status for my family members and friends who are still on 16.3.
My OpenSUSE mutter version is 46.1, although that may not be applicable to this thread.
I'm currently using Cinnamon as my DE. For some reason, GNOME, as implemented anywhere else other than Zorin OS, won't run Steam apps in windowed mode. I don't know what Zorin developers do differently, but whatever they do, it works for Steam to run apps in windowed mode.
Hope all is well!
16.3 is still supported and working, so is there a need to upgrade other than feeling like having the latest?
If mutter 43 really is the primary culprit, then resolving it would require waiting on the Gnome Developers.
Wouldn't there be the Possibility to try it with Gnome 42? I mean: Zorin is based on Ubuntu 22 but Zorin add Gnome 43. When You would make a sudo apt install vanilla-gnome-desktop
or sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop
it would be installed from the Ubuntu Repo's and so it should be Gnome 42 because Ubuntu 22 uses Gnome 42.
Only one of the people I know needs to upgrade due to some outdated libraries in 16.3. FOSS is both blessing and a curse. It's a blessing in that some phenomenal software has been made available free for use and a curse in that the developers sometimes don't care about LTS distros or supporting odd use-case scenarios.
Eventually, the other people will have to upgrade and hope that Zorin OS has that figured out by then.
Just read your posts about moving on from Zorin OS. I, personally have, for much of the same reasons. However, that leaves me at a loss for the people I've convinced to use Zorin.
What are you moving on to, if you don't mind me asking? I'm on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and may suggest OpenSUSE Slowroll or Aeon. It's not an easy install, like Zorin OS, but OpenSUSE has answered any questions I have fairly quickly and extremely quickly if I've paid for the version.
I have probably convinced a large number of people to use Zorin and I see no reason to 'undo' that. They have their own minds and can choose on their own what to use and I have no qualms about others continuing to use Zorin OS.
Debian or Asmi, generally. For my own personal use, I can use just about any base since I tend to heavily customize and tweak it to my own liking, anyway. Most any Zorin OS user, looking at my Zorin OS system, would not recognize it as Zorin OS unless they checked the base repo.
I prefer a Stable Base over cutting edge. So a solid Debian will serve, or Xubuntu can work if I am feeling lazy.
