Libre Offices shows over 300 of them!
As a non-programmer, I would like a quick and painless way, if one exists.

You can take a look at this thread:
Be careful not to remove important fonts. The removal can damage the desktop.
For the Number: A Font can have several Variations like Regular, Slim, Bold or others. This could leade to the high Number.
You could try the Program Font Manager for removing Fonts. You can install it with sudo apt install font-manager
I tried it. I did not completely understand it. There are several foreign languages I will never use. This makes it hard to locate ones I want but forget the names.
Thank you, this was helpful and I was able to remove some, but there are still lots more.
Fonts are stored as files. Take the noto fonts for example. Look at:
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto
and then do ls command to see all the noto fonts.
You can delete a font file and it wont be available to an application like Libre Office.
I tested by deleting
NotoLoopedLao-Regular.ttf
just to be sure. It disappeared from the font choices in LibreOffice Writer when it was re-opened.
I would backup any font file you delete in case you need to restore it.
It would be a lot simpler to make a list of files I do want. But I shouldn't have to.
Thank you
