How do I create a link in the GUI without the "Link to" suffix? Can I change this default behaviour? The arrow is sufficient for me.

Try here,
An old post but may help with a work around,

Adding, if your ok with the arrow being there,
Just change the name of link, ( backspace " Link to " )

@Rinzo , are you still interested?
There are several ways to have a shortcut without the arrow.

@Ocka OP is happy with arrow, just doesn't want the "Link to" text.

I did find this from doing a websearch using "Ubuntu gnome short cut remove "linked to" text"

I'd have suggested to copy and paste but then happens the same more or less, just from Link to Document to Document (copy). And also has the same size of the original rather than a link. Link to suffix is kind of “necessary” to make the user understand more clearly that it's a link to the original, but I understand that you'd prefer seeing only the arrow.
