How to remove a user

I have added a user "karan2" but now i cannot remove it through anyway. The user "karan2" can be seen in /home but it is not there in /etc/shadow or in /etc/passwd. I have already tried sudo userdel karan2, but it says user "karan2" does not existed. I can access it by /home/karan2 but it has nothing inside.
