I want to star files but no luck

I am in my folder and would like to star a file but nothing happens. Any help please?

Nautilus only allows you to star files that are stored in your Home Directory. Are you trying to star a file that is outside of ~Home?

Hmm I have tried both in home folder and outside and both dont seem to work.

I am not sure on this. I do not use Gnome or Nautilus. I tried doing a web search and came across quite a few complaints such as this one:

Starred files are visible under the "Starred" shortcut on the sidebar. Nothing appears to happen when you star a file, but it will show up there.
You can also verify if the file is starred by right-click on it and see if the option now appears as "unstar".
