I'M BACK! (did some things.. and some stuff)

That was my favorite thing and a half with the iPod back in the day! I had all my freeware software loaded in there, some offline AV scanners, and some ISO's of my go-to distros at the time - definitely was useful having a music player AND storage together in one!

That was my obsession a few years back, liked the idea of having a pedal board that looked like those packs of little cereal boxes!

Had to resort to booting into windows to get the bootloader on, tried all sorts last night on zorin and was up far too late faffing with it, worked first time in windows this morning .

It is occasionally useful to have dual boot.

Now I'm thinking about mods... Bluetooth, battery..... Oh another rabbit hole to fall down!

Going to see if I can fix the other one too... The wife is going to be SO pleased to have more tech in various states of disassembly dotted about the house!

Could be worse. I know some to have motorcycle engines in pieces on the kitchen table.

100% me.. with a Mikuni carb trying to get that stupid 250cc runnin hot from Amazon (not lying..)

Dude, heck yeah!! Welcome to the dark side :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: haha My 4.0 update install didn't take that long - but usually do select ALL the themes and download them lol .. just because.. And no sh--.. I literally just read a Google article (G-news feed on my phone) about someone that JUST 'upgraded' their old iPod to Type-C, Bluetooth, and a whopper 3000mAh LiPo pack! (got an 850mAh for mine, stays on ~5 days) .. sad thing. is the custom 3D printed case needs some post processing to fit and such...... BUT, that's still cool.. I have a clear front and wheel plus clicker I got for mine YEARS and I mean Y-E-A-R-S ago off a site I believe titled 'ipodmods.com'.. And just last year replaced the battery after that 20yr mark LOL I still have NO absolute clue how Apple managed to make such a well made little device.... but man, they've really dropped off that curve, a long, LONG time ago....... I got my BT adapter off eBay for ~20 bucks btw, took forEVER to get here, messaged the seller a few times cause it seemed to be stuck in Cali somewhere lol.. then one day just magically appeared at my door - out of fat air  (Vegas air is eh, thick isn't really the word.. dense, the air is very dense here). I used the Linux installer a few times before; about the same as Windows! I think have to set the '.sh' files to executable from chmod..

I was looking at all the various mods earlier, some of them will certainly happen at some point!

I'll probably open up the broken one first a practice run.

Yeah, those old iPods were really well made. Amazing how reliable they were given that there's a mechanical hd bouncing around in there!

One bonus I stumbled upon just now - when plugged in to computer it works as a media controller in Zorin! So I can skip tracks, play/pause and adjust volume with the jog wheel - pretty awesome! Discovered entirely by accident.

Those things REALLY grew in popularity after the mods starting rolling.. and the one left behind, that I kind of think was the closest competitor.. was the Zen Vizion M ... I really, really wanted that over the iPod.. but didn't have a DAC chip..

Yeah! HID input really caught me off-guard when I found it as well hahaha I remember right after installing and rebooting, moving files and listening to music on my desktop - my arm brushed the wheel and started blasting whatever it was I was listening to at the time LOL.. You can absolutely turn that off, and enable other settings like Car Adapter mode - not sure what that does, entirely.. Power for accessories, and much more. Pretty sure any of the 30-pin accessories will work under Rockbox. I'm not too sure why my BT adapter only works under Rockbox but not complaining.

You should load RockDOOM and give that a try lol.. felt like I was going to break the wheel just playing, and figuring out the controls  I really want to get an even older iPod, the 3rd gen (my absolute favorite variant), and have it as just LinPod and use that and Rockbox.. but man, the 3rd gen prices are kinda steep lol .. One day!

Surprised, having been dormant for so many months, it charged up and still works.
Just had to clean headphone jack with a drop of IPA to get stereo working.

Oh yeah.. mine has all the original parts minus, the battery now; everything else is how it was out of the box lol

Mine had been dormant for about a decade, after a quick charge booted up first time! They're very well made little devices, Apple at their best.

I remember when they made a big thing of bringing iTunes to windows, very exciting for me as a windows user at the time and I went right out and bought a 3rd gen ipod. Think my mate still has it come to think of it, might see if I can retrieve it to add to my museum of obsolete music players.

Just read this after mentioning my 3rd gen in previous reply, really must try and retrieve that!

I did play doom, the controls are really quite clever, not toooo bad once you get used to them!

My wife used to have a Sony NW-HD3, compared to the ipod it was a piece of junk! The UI was awful and I seem to recall it only played sony's proprietary ATRAC format.

The 3rd gen iPods were kind of my 'intro' lol my buddy had one when we were in high school. Thought the whole touch button interface was pretty awesome - I had the Dell DJ lol not too bad, ~20GB I think, interfaced straight with Windows Media Player but, .wav files..

Some of the Sony Walkman MP3 players got the Rockbox treatment but, that one.. sadly didn't lol I had one but it wasn't supported either.. lame.

Was wrong about the 3rd gen prices though - was looking some up just a bit ago  they're not too terribly bad; definitely not bad enough to pick one up and rebuild with SSD, though! I guess I forgot -- the 3rd gen does require firewire charging.. That, I don't remember...................... maybe there's a simple solder solution that charges off USB like the old PSP1000's

I think mine was the 40GB model, sold a house to buy that one! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I loved the glowing red buttons, and was great being the only person around with all the tunes in your pocket!

Ah yes, the firewire charging. I can't remember what my solution was back then, vague recollections of pcmcia firewire interface....

Went round the world with me that ipod, made my own little battery pack so I could charge it off AA batteries, although there was no reverse drain protection so you had to make sure you unplugged it once charged and not let the batteries drain too much. If I knew what I do now about electronics a diode would likely have resolved that. I remember my Dad helped me make it, and he has an electronics degree, but he didn't suggest anything like that, which is odd, but that's my Dad for you, mostly couldn't be arsed...
