Most people using computers do not do so for enjoyment outside of maybe playing the occasional game or browsing the web. They want it to work as easily and simply as possible to get what they want done.

This is an assumption that as my post above clearly addresses, is contradicted by observational evidence.
As well as all the interactions on the forum.
This assumption is repeated and regurgitated so often, usually by IT people that want to keep the users In Line, that some may begin to believe it.
But:

Or is this another "everyone knows that..." type of argument?
I think the people around you must be fairly techy for you to come up with that conclusion honestly. Outside of a few people everyone else I know does not want their technology to fight them at all.
I myself prefer something like Gnome over XFCE or KDE because I know it is less likely to give me an issue. (You may disagree but User Error is a thing)
