Hello, I have a friend who is trying to install Zorin OS Core version 18, but every time he clicks “Try/Install Zorin OS”, his graphics card fans ramp up to 100% and he gets a black screen.
We tried the “E” boot option method with this line:
linux /casper/vmlinuz maybe-ubiquity nomodeset modprobe.blacklist=nouveau,nvidia,nvidia_drm,nvidia_modeset rdblacklist=nouveau ---
But it’s still a black screen, even when using “Recent Nvidia” mode and also “Safe graphics”.
He can’t get past the boot screen. It stays black right after the menu where you choose “Try/Install Zorin OS”, Safe Graphics, etc.
So whether he’s online or offline won’t change anything, because the system never gets past the boot menu anyway.
He tried with his old GTX 1070 and it worked, so the issue is clearly related to the RTX 5070.
Even after installing the latest NVIDIA drivers and rebooting with the RTX 5070, he still gets a black screen (even though Zorin is already installed). So the problem comes from the drivers included in the Zorin OS 18 ISO.
This supplies this link - which I think is the best chance:
The reason why is that the framebuffer is loading before the driver is.
This is apparent when the fans slide into fallback mode - since they have been initialized, but no driver action is regulating them.
These commands can be entered if TTY is reachable - or by immediately entering Grub menu (tap esc or tab at the motherboard splash screen to bring the Grub Menu up if it is not set to show automatically) and using Advanced Options for Zorin - then Drop to Root Prompt
