Internet no longer working

I installed zonin a a few days ago. Everything worked fine, the yesterday i powered up the machine an while wifi is fine, no internet.
Tried everything lisyed on this forum i could get to work, but no joy. I know ots not the modem as it serves 3 families here and all devices work fine, as does my mavhine of i start it with windows 10 (i have windows on a seperate disc fro. Zorin, and use the bios screen to pick which to boot from). Im running
Zorin OS 18.1 core
Firmware 2501
Amd fx 8350 x 8
64 bit os. 8 gig ram
Wayland (could not find where to change it)
Linux 7.0.0-31-generic

I have actually installed zorin 3 tomes, all works then no internet. If zorin is so easy to break, maybe i should move on to mint or something else. I hate windows but i do need something reliable to switch to. Any help would be greatly appreciated

wifi connected but no internet while windows on the same box still works usually means dns or the default route got weird, not the wifi radio itself.

from a terminal try these:
ping -c2 1.1.1.1
ping -c2 google.com
ip route
resolvectl status

if 1.1.1.1 works but google.com fails, its dns. set that wifi dns manually to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 once, then reconnect.

if both pings fail, check ip route for a default via your modem. nm sometimes keeps a stale gateway after the isp gear reboots.

also make sure you didnt land on a guest/iot ssid that isolates clients. paste the four command outputs if it still dies and we can narrow it.

Is fast startup in the Windows power options disabled and fast boot in the BIOS, too?

Welcome to the Forum!

  • Is Secure Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • Did You received any Updates before that happened?

On the Login Screen, click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see in the bottom right Corner a Gear Icon. Click on that and choose the Option ''Zorin desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.

Secure boot is disabled, and i did get all updates when i installed, 2 days before the internet died.
I will try again to get the gear icon, as once my password shows up there is nothing else. After reading your response agin i will try the login screen again, but all i het is the zorin logo followed by the word zorin, nothing else until the password box comes up. Nowhere that i can see dors my profile pop up on the screen.

Also tried reseting DNS, did the "ping google" which worked, and most of the other things listed on the forum up to the point someone replied brst to reinstall.
The only thing i did just before loosing internet was set up brave to turn off collecting data and i think set up the VPN.
I have no problem reinstalling as i have nothing on the zoron disk short of a steam install with mech warrior mercenaries which while it does load, it runs so slow the mouse movement is literally steps every 30 second making it unplayable.
I guess the wuestion now is this

Is zorin this easy to break. If so how can i justify switching? Is mint or other l8nux platforms more stable ? I really want to dump Microsoft but of its this easy for me to screw up zorin and reinstalling is gping to be an on going thing then its basically useless to me no matyer how bad i want to change

P.S. please excuse the ■■■■■■ spelling as all i have to work with currently is my phone and not a proper browser

Maybe you could try version 17 for a time while version 18 evolves more OS 17 is very stable and worth trying

Ok, will try that, as i got frustrated and decided to reinstall. It then failed installation right after asking for a ti.e zone that it wont let me select properly.

I will try 27, and hope it doesnt decide to update on me
Thank you for all your help

You mentioned that ping google.com works and that the last thing you changed before the outage was setting up Brave's VPN. If ping actually reaches hosts by name, the network and DNS layers look fine, and the failure is likely happening inside the browser. Could you try opening a page in another browser (for example Firefox, which ships with Zorin), or disable the Brave VPN and its data settings, then reload a site? That would tell us whether it's really an OS-level internet problem or a Brave/VPN configuration one before you consider reinstalling.

Do You have Automatic Login?

Hmm ... Let's try to go back to an older Kernel to see if that helps. On the GRUB Menu on startup choose ''Advanced Options'' and then the Option with an older Kernel (without Recovery Mode).

To get the GRUB Menu Spam-press on Startup Esc or the left Shift Key. If both shouldn't work, we have to enable GRUB manually. To do that, open in Zorin the Terminal and type

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

to work on the GRUB Configuration File. You should see there this Text Block:

Here, You have to change the Lines 2 and 3 to:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
GRUB_TIMEOUT=20

the last Value makes that the GRUB Menu appears for 20 Secondes before it boots in the default. When that is too much Time for You or too less, You can change the Value to 10, 30 or 50 for Example. Or You set it to -1 to let the GRUB Menu appear until You make an Input. that is up to You.

When done the Changes, press ctrl+o to save, Enter to confirm and ctrl+x to exit. Back in the normal Terminal Overview type sudo update-grub to make the Changes affect. Don't forget that! Without it, it will not work.

Then reboot and You should have the GRUB Menu. Then do what I have explained above.

Will this work for ver 17, the 28 onstall i have is no longer functional, going to try ver 17

Yes, that works for Zorin 17, too. I did that by myself on 17, too.
