Kernel panic - overheat or software?

I'm using Zorin OS 18.1 Pro, I've been using it no problems for months, and today, when booting, it has started to give the message:

"KERNEL PANIC!
Please reboot your computer.
VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)"

I've read that a kernal panic can be due to overheating (there has been a recent heatwave) but also I've seen other users had a kernel panic and found a software solution.

At the moment my work-around is to boot, and after the "Kernel panic" window to reboot and go to the "Zorin advanced options" menu and choose Zorin not with linux 7.0.0-28-generic but an earlier version, 6.(something).

This is unfortunately currently an Issue with the new 7.0 Kernel. You should stay on the 6.17 Kernel for now until the newer one get Updates.

Thanks, that is reassuring to know (that I do not have an overheated drive). If I regularly install updates while using the 6.17 kernel, will that eventually enable me to go back to using the most up-to-date kernel?

Yes. When You let the 7.0 Kernel installed, it gets future Updates. And then You can switch back to test it.
