Latest patch causes increase in CPU and fans

Not pleased about this at all. Software Updater just applied a Zorin OS patch for security and something for games, etc.

Fans on CPU and case are now running faster. How do I remove both of these latest patches?

What is the terminal output of

grep "install" /var/log/dpkg.log

The output is amazingly large so below is just the activity for today. I did do a purge on the protonmail-bridge I put in yesterday as it was popping up on power on and wanting me to log in. Pulled it out "just in case" it was a process that was bothering the update today and causing the CPU and fan to ramp up.

i did just move one aux fan from a CPU power conn to a different power conn on the board and all is quieter now. That one fan would normally ramp up slightly when starting an application and then ramp back down. However, after the update today it ramped up a bit and stayed there.

The work around has been to move the fan and, this update very likely is only affecting my system. Others probably won't have an issue.

Other than the half-install, I do not see anything that should create higher cpu usage...
I see no graphics related packages.
Can you run

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt --fix-broken install

Is this a notebook? If so:

sudo apt install tlp

Finally,

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Please reboot and test.

Not a laptop, but a newly built desktop.

Here is the Terminal output for the command you requested. It did upgrade 3 packages at the end...after I answered yes to the upgrade prompt.

I wanted to post this first, I will now reboot the box.

thanks

Whoops ... forgot to say there will be no graphics package, per se, as I am using an on board graphic chip that is a part of the CPU. The graphics is the Intel UHD Graphics 770. Below is the box I built.

My Zorin Linux Box:

  • Intel Core i7 12th Generation i7-12700 for the cpu
  • Noctua NH-L9i-17xx Low Profile for the CPU cooler
  • ASROCK H670M Pro RS Micro ATX for the mother board
  • Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD M.2 NVMe SSD boot drive
  • G-Skill Flare X Series F4-3200C14D-16GFX for memory
  • Silverstone Milo 11 Micro ATX for the case
  • Silverstone 300 watt TFX for the PSU
  • Noctua NF-A8 PWM 80mm fan for case cooling
  • Intel SSD DC S3500 80gig for 6 GB/s SATA storage

I do not see a kernel upgrade, either...

In Software & Updates can you ensure that in the Zorin Software tab, the top four boxes are checked.

Then in terminal you might want:

sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoremove

All four are checked, I will enter the command you want now.

Done ... it did pull out the two dejavu fonts I will need again later on but that is OK.

It had those set to automatically installed... But I clearly remember you having manually installed them...

Yep ... we had a thead on that, something for certain got hosed up when I tried to install the protonmail-bridge package.

I checked my About tab. It show OS as Zorin OS 16.2, OS Type 64-bit, Windowing System X11.

hmmmmm....I got to stop playing with the Terminal, I may accidentally get good at it. Here is, I think the kernal version.

lou@lou-zorin:~$ uname -r
5.15.0-52-generic

sudo apt install -y fonts-dejavu-core fonts-dejavu-extra

Should ensure that they are installed and set to manually installed.

Well...I was sitting here looking at the manual in terminal when the screen suddenly went shaded and the fonts changed their hue.

I had one of those "Oh my god...Kenny's dead" moments and thought I had broken the terminal. Then I remembered I had set the background to that day/night sunrise to sunset option. Had to go back and change it back to white background.

The fonts-dejavu-core were already installed, what I did need to install though was the fonts-dejavu. I did not see where it was set to manual but that is OK, they are installed and that is great. :+1:

Ok good, looks like that problem won't be a problem, now.

What about fan speed? Still increased?

Give me a moment and I will power down and move the plug back to the CPU Fan connector. Was waiting until I got the OK from you. Be right back.

Yeah...still increased but not nearly as much. The room is 70 degrees so not a room heat issue. The new upgrade is perhaps making the hardware (fans/cpu) more responsive...which is what it is, but is something I can live with. I can move the fan back to a Fan only connector and all will be good.

Normally, the fans don't ramp up unless I have a video playing on VLC, or similar CPU intensive activity. After the upgrade the fans ramped up on their own, and would briefly go even higher when starting a browser.

None the less, you have helped me fix something else tonight and I learned a few things and for that, I am appreciative and I thank you.

thanks!

P.S. ... the kernal version, is that the one I should be on?

That is currently the latest available kernel on Zorin OS 16. It should be fine. I am on the same.

Fan speed increase usually means that the CPU is working more.
Have you checked your CPU percentages?
You can use system monitor or - I actively monitor CPU percentages with a conky.
