Login screen is laggy for a few seconds after entering my password on Zorin OS 18.1

Hi everyone,

I'm using Zorin OS 18.1 Core on a Dell Inspiron 14 5430 with 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

Whenever I start or restart my laptop, I enter my password at the login screen. After logging in, the desktop takes a few seconds to become responsive. During that time, the screen feels laggy like not smooth opening like windows. Once everything finishes loading, the system works normally.

Is this expected, or could there be a driver or startup-related issue? How can I make the login experience smoother?

  • Does Your System run in Wayland or X11? You can check that with the Command echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE via Terminal.
  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • Is Windows is still installed: Is Fast Start-up in Windows disabled?
  • What Graphics Card do You have?
  • What CPU do You have?

Since I can't see how long the delay lasts, it's hard for me to say whether that's normal or not. For me, too, the desktop takes a few seconds to load.

You could test if it is better when you switch to XOrg. Logout, and at login screen click on your username, then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There select Zorin Desktop on Xorg. Then login with your password.

There are free services where you can upload videos. The Zorin Forum doesn't offer this feature, and I've never done it myself.

I think this is a Moment to load the Desktop. That should be fine in my Opinion.

I wouldn't think so. Yes, there is a Moment; that is visible. But I wouldn't see it as an Issue. It needs this Moment to load. This can have various Reasons. Background Processes, Autostart Programs, automatic Update Checks that starts ...

Gnome desktop and for instance Kde Plasma desktop, can takes time - depend on your hardware - to load and being functional.
In my case on Zorin with a Thinkpad P53, These two desktops "takes time" maybe less less than one second, but even it appear like "it's loading" ...
Cinnamon deskop with LinuxMint load quickly and desktop such as XFCE or LXQT even MATE, you even cannot see that it's loading, there are lightweight desktops.
Somehow it looks like "something need time to load at startup" - hardware ? Startup applications ?
I'm not an expert but maybe trying to find out some process after connection could help?
journalctl --since "10 min ago" | grep -iE 'pam|logind|user@|gnome-session|dbus|gdm|gdm3'
then copy and past result here.
This command line can be passed has simple user in a terminal.

This issue is seems to be ongoing. So I have taken SOZA's suggestion and removed the :white_check_mark:Solution tag that was placed at @Ponce-De-Leon post #12 for now. But put it back there if the 2 sec delay is considered normal on Z18.1.

I cannot find out "official informations" about how long Gnome Desktop should takes to load - indeed, it depends also of the hardware.
Some say that a "normal load" should not take more than 10, 30 seconds ... It seems even too long to me but it could be interesting to get feedbacks from internet, linux's forums, etc ... And, from this community i guess.
Next time i boot the pc, i'll try to pay attention on it, but i can say it is fast enough, at least too my use.
