How do You set up VLC as default for this Filetype? Maybe a Reboot could help.
Hi there, thanks for your reply.
I have restarted the computer, I set the default for the m3u files by right-clicking on the icon and choosing properties and choosing vlc then clicking ‘ save a default’.

Hi there.
I noticed something, don't know if relevant or not.
These playlists and infact all the files in all my windows shares that are linked/mounted in the /media/ directory are set as "root" in the permissions tab of properties.
Shouldn't they be owned by me, Or is that "normal"?
Sorry if it's a stupid Q.

Hmm ... they should. And the Files are shared with Windows? On the same Drive or over Network?
Hi there, thanks for your reply.
The playlists and music files are on a windows pc through the network. They are the files that are owned by ‘root’.
I have copied the playlists to the Zorin pc, and their icons stay as defaulted to the videos app. Even though the default that opens them is VLC.
So I doubt that editing the paths in those playlists will make any difference. Anyway that is what it is. At least they will play.
Pro 18 might not have that issue. It’s not a biggie.

When they come from a Windows Machine through Network, it could be that they will treated as root but I'm not sure here.
But You say, You can open them without Issues, yes? So, no need to type in Passoword or something?
Hi there, thanks for your reply.
I think there is two issues.
The music files play fine when played 'directly' from their location on the windows share, through VLC on the Z pc. So that is not a problem.
The playlists that I copied from that windows share to the Z pc are showing the paths for the files in their original location, so those paths need to be altered to reflect the change in location of the playlist, which are now on the Z pc.
Even though I have set the default player for the .m3u playlist files to VLC, and VLC does open them. The icon displayed in the file manager for those playlists remains to be the "Videos" app. Not a biggie and perhaps v18 will sort that out.
So I am just pointing out that "bug" in my v17 Pro. And I will try to work out editing the playlist files with relative paths rather than absolute (if its possible)

Music files, in particular, are set in the
system settings > default applications > Music
The change is immediate, no reboot.
Hi there, thanks for your reply.
However you are missing my points.
I just wanted to point out those two things.

I found this thread with the same issue in Zorin 18 Core. It certainly does appear to be a long-standing bug.
I am a big fan of Gapless (G4music) music player and of Celluloid movie player. I set as defualt apps for music and video respectively but had the same problem with m3u playlists.
The only solution I found was to edit the file ~/.config/mimeapps.list
You'll need to enable hidden folders in Nautilus/your file manager, as .config is hidden. I renamed it mimeapps.backup and Open With...Text Editor. I discovered loads of audio formats were still set to open in my video player. So I used find and replace tool to switch the video plater command io.github.celluloid_player.Celluloid.desktop
for the audio player command found on the lines where the default had been correctly changed - in my case:
com.github.neithern.g4music.desktop
I replaced this in every line that starts with "audio" but left all lines starting with "video" on Celluloid (obviously)
I then saved the resulting file as "mimeapps.list" and restarted the machine.
m3u files (and all other audio files) now open natively with Gapless. I am sure you can find the equivalent "com.whatever" or "io.whatever" for Totem and VLC respectively in your mimeapps list and do the same. If you somehow break anything, delete the .list file and rename the .backup file to .list then restart, in order to restore previous settings.
EDIT - I should add that I only use playlists for music, otherwise you need playlists to open in an audio/video player like VLC, which is the OP's preference anyway.
Hi there, thank you for your interest and trouble shooting in resolving this problem.
I will have a go, cheers CD
OK, doing a bit more research, the specific entries referring to playlists appear to be:
audio/mpegurl=***
audio/x-mpegurl=***
audio/scpls=***
audio/x-scpls=***
So this should save you accidentally altering something otherwise important! Set these to whatever should come after the = sign to launch VLC.
Hi there, thank you again for your interest and efforts. I will get around to it soon, bit tied up at the moment.
Cheers CD
