ended up buying a usb wifi dongle ... was a bit of mission to find out which one was compatible lots of tp link options but seems like it was a little iffy if they would work - i ended up getting a lower spec wifi dongle but it was the only one that said it was linux compatible - which is a downside - i was hoping things had matured more

Damn, that sucks. :frowning: I did some digging and couldn't find much either for USBs that explicitly say Linux support and offer something above wifi 6. Tbh you could just go into a Best Buy or something and bring your laptop to try it on their wifi. If it doesn't work, quick return, lol. I kinda fixed mine but it's still finicky on occasion, so I'm buying an internal wifi card. My laptop supports disassembly so it'll be a fun project for me. Found a wifi 7 one compatible with Linux and AMD motherboards, which would also be an ugrade from my wifi 6e card, but it still worries me a little because it's mediatek.

Linux is a lot like Congress, always slow to adapt to changing times, often offering imperfect solutions once they finally do lol. But for a long time, you were a God just to get it running, so it's come a long way, and it'll keep improving. Better times are coming.

Update: Put the new WiFi chip in and all the problems have resolved. Took about 15 minutes and the right tools (an iFixit set works great). If you have an AMD board (Vivobook is I think) and your laptop is upgradable, I would highly recommend this. I did it on an Omnibook.

Also, I forgot to have my uninstall script reset the wifi.powersave line. To change it back to normal type the following into your terminal:

sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi-powersave.conf

Arrow down to "wifi.powersave=2", and change it to a 3.

Ctrl + o then press enter to save, ctrl + x to exit.
