Nothing to add to the title. Please move to KDE. That is all.
Quite an unreasonable request to make mere months (based on the past) before the release of Zorin 18.
Yes. There have been no announcements about switching desktop environments. We did get news about fading out Zorin Lite (XFCE), to (I assume) focus on developing Zorin Core and Pro (Gnome).
Well, this will not happen for Zorin 18; I wouldn't expect that. You could suggest that for Zorin 19 but I would not have much Confidence that it will happen, too.
I would also think it might depend on the Gnome straight-jacket used to prevent modifications to the DE.
Is KDE beginner friendly? I honestly don't know. But I do know my Zorin OS shines. ![]()
With the ZorinGroup dropping to Just Gnome...
I think it would be beneficial to Zorin OS to offer more than One D.E.
This limited scope and domination of a desktop is not in the spirit of the GnuLinux community as a whole.
That said; I find it unlikely that the ZorinGroup will consider the KDE desktop environment. Their statements are pretty clear in that they believe that an Only Gnome direction is all they are interested in.
It is. Depending on how you look at it, it's more or less beginner friendly than GNOME. More, in that you can do a fair bit more desktop customization with just stock KDE Plasma, less in that it exposes quite a few options for configuration that could intimidate someone, whereas GNOME without extensions doesn't. On the other hand, having to know about and find extensions to get some functionality I consider very basic, I find very user unfriendly. Zorin's largest single identifying trait is, in my opinion, the work the Zorin Brothers have done to make GNOME acceptable without much extension.
Were I to have my way, KDE Plasma would absolutely be officially supported. As it is, I constantly flirt with other distributions hoping to find one that fits just right, but as of now, none have.
I actually find it more Windows like than Gnome. Simple example: you can click on an icon and change its name. You can't do that with Gnome but rather have to right click or hit F2. Zorin as a Windows replacement is top notch which is why I promote it to friends, family, and online through a site I recently started. I think KDE Plasma is evolving better than Gnome's latest versions.
Another example. KDE connect works with both Android and iOS whereas Zorin Connect is only Android.
I came across something recently saying Zorin supported KDE. I was looking for answers to another question and happened on it. So take it with a grain of salt. I'm still learning.
I tried installing KDE but it's buggy. Example is that drives other than the boot drive can't connect, at least I haven't gotten it to work.
Not a problem I've had, but I've only made one half-hearted attempt at getting Plasma going on Zorin. I use it on other distributions that actually offer it properly, as I specifically want Plasma 6, which isn't doable on Zorin, as Zorin is built on an older glibc library.
That's very subjective. Some people love it... but that's definitely not me.
Gnome offers a very minimal system with few options exposed to the user through the settings. And you have extensions that build on top of that to give you whatever extra functionality you need.
KDE on the other hand has all options, everything, all at once. This is great if you like to fine tune everything... but I find it messy and chaotic, and frustrating even when all I need is change a little something occasionally.
My ideal system is the best of both worlds. Have few options exposed by default to make it nice and simple to work with. And then, on each setting category, have an "advanced" button that exposes the whole shebang.
You can install KDE Plasma limited install but it is an old version. My first choice is PCLOS Debian Plasma, but also available with budgie, cinnamon, MATE, and xfce. My second choice is the rolling release Q4OS which has a look switcher:
That is a bit difficult and depends from the personal Perspective I think. Plasma offers out of the Box a lot of Settings and Adjustments for set up and customize the System.
That is a good Thing because You have all these Possibilities direct from the Start and You don't need to install Additions to make that like You have it on Gnome with the Gnome Extensions.
But when You start and use it the first Time, it can be overwhelming. It takes Time to go everything. And when You have done something what You want to revert and You don't remember where the Setting was ... it maybe could take a couple of Minutes to find it back.
At the End stands: Try it if You want and when You like it, use it if You want.
If you want try Plasma, I would suggest KDE Neon (is Ubuntu based and comes directly from KDE), Kubuntu or Fedora KDE.
If they're using an Nvidia card, I recommend against Fedora KDE and would suggest Nobara or even Bazzite, despite Bazzite being immutable. Fedora doesn't offer an easy install for Nvidia drivers, and as I recall requires jumping through hoops with the RPMFusion repos or some such. Nobara and Bazzite are both Fedora based, but will make available the drivers without putting the user through the hassle.
