Linux > ZorinOS > Day 1 > 3rd install
( First time couldn't get rid of the on-screen keyboard > forgot where it came from (Zorin appearance). Second time got tired of logging into Brave and VPN every time - third time set pw on startup. )
Things get easier with familiarity.
Irfanview in taskbar using wine and bottles.
AI makes it easy to get terminal cmds without a big learning curve.
Hi and welcome. I suspect you are well acquainted with Irfanview coming from Windows. Have you tried GNU/Linux alternatives, gThumb, Gwenview, F-Spot.
To help you on your Zorin journey:
Hi and thanks
No, haven't as yet. So comfortable with Irfanview and wanted to change the wallpaper straight away - just not keen on pictures - so was first thing done... AND wanted to test wine.
Cheers
Whilst I do not like snap, Irfanview is apparently now available as a snap package. I have no way of checking this with software but you could install via the terminal.
sudo snap install irfanview
I only use Synaptic Package Manager now, plus Gdebi to install third party .deb packages, plus command line. I removed Software (gnome-software) as it does not meet my needs. (And currently posting from Q4OS! )
Already had a problem with snap and software. Had a hard time installing Lazarus - but that was also partly due to AI - but installed easily with sudo apt install lazarus, VPN and Thonny from direct download.
Welcome to the Forum!
But please be careful with this Commands. If it give a wrong Command or a not adequate one, it could make Trouble.
I use whatever works for me at the moment.
APT (Terminal) <<<--- Often Used
Synaptic Package Manager <<<--- Often Used
Gnome Software Store <<<--- Most Often Used
DEB Install <<<--- Rarely used
Good to know. Thanks. Just downloaded Firefox Linux 64-bit (.tar.bz2) which is like a portable and just checking it out. It's showing up under the Flathub icon in the taskbar, though, and just contemplating uninstalling the flathub version because the portable loads so much quicker
Once it said, to fix my broken Adwaita theme, I should type "sudo apt purge adwaita-icon-theme". OK, I did that. I thought that it would only remove the Icons that depend on the icon theme. I noticed apparently the screen flashing some "Entfernen von gnome-builder, Entfernen von nautilus, Entfernen von firefox" (Removing gnome-builder, removing nautilus, removing firefox) but I thought of it as nothing. What happened was it deleted every app on my system because Adwaita is the GTK library, which every native GNOME app uses, so I only had the KDE Konsole app left on my system. I needed to install everything again via apt.
Small tip for newcomers: Stay with the GNOME desktop (default in Zorin OS), if you don't have really old hardware and need one of the lightweight XFCE and LXQt. It's the most beautiful and modern one by far, in my opinion.
Hahaha... did something similar... sudo apt remove --purge $(deborphan).
Anyway, not bother with the portable. Instead, installed apt. See how it goes...
Yes, when You make an Uninstall command, look at the List what Elements will be removed with it.
For Your Adwaita Issue, maybe the Command sudo apt reinstall
would were better because it doesn't kick it out the System, it reinstalls it.
It started automatically, didn't ask these "confirm changes". Have fixed it, needed to enter TTY. first thing I did was just installed a desktop so that I can work on a GUI, then gnome-terminal, then the rest.
The small issues in Linux...
