Hi I have installed Zorin 18 Core and so far I am very pleased. Wifi was recognised and runs well, Printer found and added and functions well but I cannot install a nvidia driver. I would like to install the 580 version but the additional drivers menu only shows 470 version. If I try to install this it gives an error10(313) message and does not install. I have checked the bios settings and both the fast boot and secure boot are disabled. How do I proceed please?
Welcome to the Forum!
Could You say what Nvidia Card You have?
have him type in a terminal nvidia-smi lets see if thats working the code he has is for a kernel error on the driver
Response was:-
nvidia-smi failed because it couldn't communicate with the nvidia driver. Make sure that the latest nvidia driver is installed and running
Unfortunately no.
Do You use a Laptop or a PC? If Laptop: Can You name Brand and Model? Alternatively could You type in Terminal the Command sudo lshw -C video please?
It sounds like your Nvidia Card is too old for the latest driver.
Without knowing the card, we cannot say for sure.
lspci | grep -i nvidia
should show what card you have.
Thanks for that Aravisian. It is a GeforceGTX 600 Ti
That dates to about 2012; I am reasonably certain it cannot use any driver later than 470.
It works just fine on Zorin OS 17 (Which is still supported).
It can be easily installed with one command.
On Zorin OS 18, the powers that be have adjusted things in such a way to make it very difficult to install the 470 driver, you would need to also downgrade the kernel to 6.8 or earlier, then install the 470 driver with DKMS manually.
Thank you. It shows GTX 600 Ti
ok if nvidia -smi is down he may need to install/reinstall the gcc so it can see the vid card
in a terminal type ```
sudo apt install gcc-13 g++-13
that should install the gcc and the compiler then reboot after it is sucsessful
Thank you. It looks as though it will be best if I forget about nvidia and go with the recommended non-proprietary driver.
thats np nvidia has always been a slight pain at times thats why i got an amd vid card....lol
Thanks wesoliv429. I see I have a lot to learn lol.
not sure why on some installs the nvidia settings dont work and needs to be reinstalled for some reason.......well as long as the driver you have works....all Good
been there my friend dont give up it will be awsome once ya get used to the OS
Just want to say Thanks to all who helped. What a great group of people!
