Ongoing trouble with restarts after system updates

IFor the last three or four system updates I have had a problem with the reboot after the install. For background I use saved default of 6.8 kernel so it shouldn't have anything to do with the 7.0 kernel.

Each time it goes into what it terms "emergency mode" and won't boot. The only way to get out is to do a hard reboot followed by selecting the recovery mode of 6.8 kernel. That lists a lot of stuff that isn't particularly instructive and then hangs, after which another hard reboot often gets me beyond the problem though it sometimes takes two attempts.

With a normal reboot (not prompted by software updater,) I don't have the emergency mode issue and the only quirk is that after rebooting I have to go into terminal and reset cups defaults in order t access my printers. So it must be a software updater issue.

Any suggestions? I did consider a reinstall but can't copy the 18.1 iso to my ventoy stick which is convinced it belongs to root (I created it when I was still using windows). That is less of a problem - I can wipe the stick and reformat then recreate ventoy.

Is this specific to Kernel Updates or with every Update via Software Updater?

I think all updates/restarts. I looked at the list of updates this morning before telling it to update. There was a lot of system stuff, python and samba and things but I don’t think there was actually a kernel update. May be wrong or didn’t understand how kernel update is labeled. I don’t use the updated kernel anyway.

You could try for a While to update the System via Terminal. This would also give Output when something goes wrong.

You could use the Software Updater to check the Updates and then open the Terminal and do the actual Update.
