Opening Joplin crashes desktop

This issue happened today, while yesterday I was able to run Joplin just fine (official AppImage from their website). The only thing that comes to mind, I performed a sudo apt autoremove and that ended up removing a lot of packages, but I didn't think much of it since it's only supposed to remove unused ones, right?

I never had this issue before on Zorin (I am using Zorin 18 Core).

I installed the Flatpak version and this issue no longer occurs.

Edit: Okay, nevermind. Issue wasn't fixed. I just installed a custom plugin in Joplin, and now each time I start the flatpak app it crashes again. Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem with Flatpak Steam. Everytime I launched Steam, it crashed. Someone suggested I launch Steam via the Terminal, and that magically allowed me to launch it.

I have a feeling the auto remove, well, removed more then what you wanted. I have gone through the same thing before as well Rose, and handicapt a couple apps. Of course re-installing the apps never fixed what I did.

You could try launching the app in Terminal, see if that works. I the end, you might have to re-install specific dependencies, that Joplin requires. At the end of the day, running any app in Terminal, will show a log, which can list what went wrong.

I figured out that me syncing my existing notes to this device is what causes the issue. Once I purge all files and configurations, I can open the app normally. Haven't pinpointed the exact issue though, it may have something to do with end-to-end encryption I use. And it's interesting it only happens on Zorin 18, may be a Ubuntu 24.04. specific issue, who knows.

I assume you have already made sure to run in Xorg? I say this, cause many problems people face on Zorin OS 18, are caused by defaulting into Wayland. Good to know it was just a config issue, and all you had to do was delete the data, reset it to the default config. Coolbeans!

Yes I immediately switched to Xorg after installing Zorin 18. It just always proves to be a more stable experience, plus it deals with some minor annoyances I have (Desktop bookmark actually being where I want it to be in file manager, and the web apps installed by the new Zorin's app having proper titlebar that follows Zorin's themes, also the ability to perform alt+F2+r reset).

Also, my issue isn't fixed just yet, I still need these notes to be synced :joy: I also looked into the Joplin web version, but I can't sync over onedrive for that one - figures. Always a dead end somewhere...

There's a bug tracker that sounds related to the issue you're seeing:

Although my first thought was due to Joplin desktop being use of Electron (Chromium wrapper to make desktop applications) — there have been other issues with Chromium-based browsers.
There's also an issue created for it, which might be related:

It might be worth reporting this directly to the developer's bug tracker.

A user on Reddit reported issues with their desktop crashing and giving them the same screen as mine, even if we didn't get it the same way. This seems important enough to relay to the devs.
