Partition table shows USB drive only - fast boot etc. already disabled

Hello there,

after a successful installation on an old MacBook Pro, I now want to install ZorinOS on a HP Pavillon Ultrabook 15 (Intel Core i5 from 2012) under Windows 10.

When installing, I do not get an option like "... Something else". Instead, the partition table is showing up with a warning message (see screenshot 1). In the partition table, only the installation USB drive is visible (screenshot 2):

Fast Boot, Fast start in Windows as well as Secure boot are disabled. Bit locker seems not to be active as it is not even shown in the Control panel.

Also a separate partition on the HD is not showing up. Goal is a Dualboot installation (Windows/ZorinOS).

I would be grateful for some help as I'm stuck now.

Thank you in advance,
Frank

Welcome to the Forum!

So, Secure Boot, Fast Boot in BIOS and Fast Start-Up in windows are already disabled. that is good.

  • Is the BIOS run in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
  • What Tool did You choose to create the bootable USB Stick?
  • How is the Stick formatted?
  • Did You checked the Checksum of the ISO?

Hello und thanks for the warm welcome!

  • the BIOS runs in UEFI mode
  • The stick was first created with Etcher and then with USBImager
  • The stick is EXFat formatted. Is it necessary to format as Ext4 and if so, do you know how to format as Ext4 from Windows or Mac?
  • Checksum of the ISO was okay (both Etcher and USBImager)

No. It would be good to use FAT32 for the USB Stick.

Because You have Windows, I would recommend to use Rufus for creating the Boot Stick. Choose there for Your UEFI BIOS on the Option ''Partition Sheme'' GPT (see red marked Area):

I tried Rufus with your suggested settings, but then it's not possible to boot from the stick which I tried with two different ones (good quality sticks).

Do you have an idea?

The clue is in the make of device you are using. When you boot into Windows what does Disk Management show in respect of partitions? Can you upload a screenshot?

Yes, here is the screenshot of the current config attached (if German is an issue, just let me know).

The volume F: was created to be used for Zorin as a test as C: is currently not showing up in the Zorin installer.

What exactly means ''is not possible to boot from''?
Aren't the Sticks detected in BIOS or do they but You only have a Black Screen? Do You get any Error Messages?

Your Partition F for Linux is a Problem because it is in ntfs formatted. When You plan to create a Dual Boot system, You can create a seperate Partition before installing but You don't have to. And when You do it, don't format it. Let it empty.

When You install Zorin and You want create a Dual Boot System with Zorin, you get in the Installation Screen the Option to do that (see Option 1):

When You choose this Option, You will be ask in the next Step how much Disc Space You want use and the Rest makes the Installer automatically. So, it wouldn't be neccessary to create the Partition for Zorin by Yourself.

To interupt the normal Windows boot process, I press the respective key to boot from the USB stick. This is not reacting anymore since the ISO was generated by using Rufus. It starts with Windows as usual without any message.

I will delete the F again. As mentioned, I created it due to the missing screen that you are showing below. When I started this topic, I mentioned that this screen with the option "Something else" is not showing up in my case. I only get the two screens you see in my starting post (see here again):

Could You try it with going in the BIOS and start the USB Stick from there?

The BIOS of this HP Pavillon only offers to change the boot order, so I put USB on top, but it's not working either. I tried also different USB ports (USB 2 instead of USB 3) but also no success.

I was wondering if you have 4 Primary Partitions present on the main hard drive, and if Windows 10 was mbr instead of GPT this can be the issue. Primare partition might be out of view because you would need to drag the right side of each partition to check this. I have an HP-Mini 110 (Netbook) with Windows 7 Starter. I could not install GNU/Linux because it has 4 Primary partitions, the maximum you can have if mbr is used. So to install would mean deleting 1 of the Primare partitions to allow GNU/Linux to be installed. You always need to shrink C:\ in Disk Manager to create free space for Zorin.

Zorin 18 is released now. You could try it with that. Download it, check the Checksum, choose GPT in Rufus and create the Boot Stick.

Yes, true and that could be a solution, but I don't know if one of the primary partitions can be deleted without harming Windows? There are two recovery partitions, one EFI system partion and one, which is not described further ...

Yes, I will try Zorin 18, but this will take now a bit as this installation is a service for a friend of mine and he needs his laptop the next few days.
Thank you for all the help and I will let you all know as soon as I have news on this.
