Pro - Fractional Scaling wont work

Yesterday i changed core 18.1 to pro 18.1 on a new machine.

A laptop with below HD screen where the scaling was set to 125% with the switch at the display config. A switch where every change of the steps result to adhoc change of the scaling.

After update and reboot: Same switch, same position is now "Enable fracional Scaling". The scaling is 125% like before and using the switch result to nothing, the screen is always at 125%.

Known bug?

Hello,
What GPU ?
are you on wayland or Xorg ? in terminal

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

in your are in Wayland try to switch to Xorg:

  • Logout
  • At the login screen, click your username (don't enter password)
  • Click the gear icon in the bottom right
  • Select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg"

Session is wayland, the scale button was there before the upgrade

GPU is Intel UHD Silverlake N6000

Okay with xorg session the switch is also missing. On my Levovo Yoga installed with 18.0 and upgraded to Pro, there are both switches in the config.

With Wayland there is no "normaly", most of the time problems are solved when you switch to Xorg

Anyway if you say the button was here before the upgrade you can try to boot with older kernel, try this

  • Restart the PC and hold Escape during boot to access the GRUB menu (may also be accessed with Shift)
  • Select "Advanced options for Zorin OS"
  • Here, you can see the available kernels to boot into. Choose the older one (without recovery option)

Could You increase the Resolution to 1080p and check if the Scaling comes back again? I'm running in Wayland, too and when I activate Fractional Scaling it works fine for me. But I use higher Resolutions. And did You made a Reboot?

Interesting, switching to every resolution below native display, places the scale switch into the config (with reboot). But switching back to native will remove it again.

Kernel change was also tested, back to .29 or up to .34 does not change a thing here. Is this related to some user config that could be renamed for testing?

Bei meinem Zorin OS 18.1 Pro funktioniert die Fraktionierung unter Wayland auf allen 4 Rechnern, allerdings hier mit noch höherer Auflösung:

On my Zorin OS 18.1 Pro, fractionation works under Wayland on all 4 computers, albeit at a even higher resolution:

All 4 PCs have Intel or AMD GPUs, Linux Kernel 6.17.0.
But the scaling values are displayed differently for you than for me.

There are combinations with and some without the scaling function, i found this bug for ubuntu 17, 18 and 24 beta in gitlab and reddit posts. Seems to be related to the "experimental" fractional scaling.
The crazy part is, that this works allright with earlier installed machines here. My desktop and gaming laptop was installed with 18.0. Maybe an earlier gnome version.

Scaling madness

Maybe it is a Combination of Resolution, Hardware and Connection. Well, in Your Case it is a built-in Display. So, this could be a Point out.

Maybe because of the Resolution Settings - especially the lower one's - couldn't be supported well. You could check Debian 13 with Gnome 48 and if it behaves there the same or if it is better. When it's better, I guess it is because of the newer Gnome Version. Or try it with Ubuntu 26.04. That comes with Gnome 50.

Yes you got the right idea, it's the same when bootet with Ubuntu 26 LTS. No scaling for the 1366 resolution, what is for TV sets old and known as HD. I think the gnome devs took this resolution out. Thanks
