Hello. This is my first post in this forum. I have been using Zorin Core for six months, starting with version 17.1 and then moving to 17.2.
At the beginning of this week, I ran into an issue following an update, which impacted my experience with fractional scaling. For reference, I have two 2K monitors and use fractional scaling at 125%. After the recent updates, most applications, whether Flatpak or not, became blurry. I tried a few solutions, including removing the latest Nvidia drivers and rolling back to the previous kernel (6.8.47 -> 6.8.45), but with no success. I ended up reinstalling Zorin on my desktop PC using the 7.2 ISO and have disabled automatic updates. I've kept kernel 6.8.40 for now, and everything is working fine.
I encountered the exact same issue on my laptop, which I also connect to my monitors, and fractional scaling is very useful in this setup. For reference, both my PCs have an Nvidia graphics card, and the laptop additionally has an Intel chip.
I will likely reinstall Zorin on my laptop to resolve the issue on that device as well.
Since I didn’t see any posts on this topic, I wanted to share my experience.
You wrote that you use an Nvidia Card. Is Your System running with Wayland or Xorg? With an Nvidia Card should Xorg be a better Choice. You can check that. Go to Settings>About and there look for the Line ''Window Manager''.
If there should stand Wayland, go to the Login Screen. Click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. It have to be appeared! When it is appeared, you should see in the bottom right Corner a Gear Icon. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in and test if it works better.
Thank you very much for this response; unfortunately, it doesn’t work. Firstly, my desktop PC, which is working well because I haven't installed the latest updates, is using X11 by default. Secondly, my laptop is on Wayland. I tried using Xorg and then completely disabling Wayland, but the problem is that fractional scaling doesn’t work at all. On both of my 2K screens, it feels as though only the top corner is displaying, as if it were zoomed in.
I reinstalled Zorin on my laptop, and here are my conclusions:
X11 handles fractional scaling only if all screens have the same resolution, which is the case for my desktop PC (two 2K screens at 125%).
Wayland, on the other hand, manages multiple screens with different resolutions and different scales (100% on one, 125% on others), but most applications run on X11, so it uses XWayland, which creates a blurring effect in the applications.
On my desktop, I’m using X11, and on my laptop, I’m on Wayland. When I force applications that support Wayland (such as Chromium, VSCode, and JetBrains Suite) to run on Wayland, I no longer experience any blurring in those applications.
I believe that an update had switched my desktop PC to Wayland, which is why I suddenly encountered blurring.
I haven’t updated my desktop yet, but I now have a better idea of what’s happening if the issue recurs.
