Problem with ZorinOS system app packages

Has anyone else encountered any problems with ZorinOS system app packages? I have experienced these 2 problems ...

  1. Firefox, I installed a few Addons/Extensions and they did not show on the top right panel were they should of (FF Multi-Account Containers, Ublock Origin and NoScrypt) these extensions also did not appear on the mouse right-click menu either, yet in the Extensions Manager they were installed and enabled, there was no way to access them for use. I uninstalled and re-installed yet the problem persisted. I gave up and installed Firefox as a Flatpak and it is working perfectly.

  2. Tor browser, upon first launch it tries to download and all I get are errors no matter which mirror II use with the Tor settings launcher, I finally found a mirror that worked the Tarball downloaded and after over an hour it was still trying to "verify the signature" So I cancelled it, maybe I will install as a Flatpak.
This was the error message from Tor Project ...

and this from other mirrors ...

Any ideas what is happening with these ZorinOS system apps?

Firefox as Zorin package is no longer installed as a .deb package but as a snap. This can cause problems.

To install the .deb package follow this guide and choose the first method:

The use of the Tor browser is blocked by the government in some countries.

Well this was a .deb package and to the best of my recollection I obtained via the Software Manager, a week ago I decided to use it, encountered the addon/extensions problem and checked in the software manager what type of package it was and it came up as ZorinOS system app and uninstalled it and re-installed it and it was not a snap ... As I said I gave up and installed a flatpak ... Still the problem with the Tor browser persists.

If you select the Zorin package of Firefox in the software store, Firefox is installed as a snap package and not as a .deb package. This is not the case with other Zorin packages, which are actually "real" .deb packages. And snaps often make problems on the system as they are sandboxed.

Maybe the use of Tor browser is blocked in your country .

I installed Zorin on this laptop as either 17.1 or 17.2 when Firefox was still the default browser so yes I did have Firefox as a .deb package

I'm not in China, Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea or Venezuela so NOT blocked, maybe always on VPN is causing problems?

Yes, VPN can cause the problems.

I will switch off and try again. This would seem peculiar to me if by design by the Tor Project as it's Tor and for various reasons eg like being in one of the countries listed by me, you might want to hide the fact that you're downloading Tor however this might not be a Tor Project issue(?)

Take a look at VPN notes.

Here is a helpsite from mozilla. Do you use private browsing in Firefox? There the add ons are disabled by default and you have to enable them.

I gave up after trying 10 different mirrors off my VPN with many amusing error messages eg "You may be under attack" and "Not official mirror"

... er, No I'm not ...
I installed on VPN the Flatpak, it download, launched, had issue of No sound on Youtube (?) did a speed test and got an acceptable 16.5 mbps through VPN via Starlink ... not sure what the no sound problem is on YT(?)

I researched all this stuff last week and read these articles and none of them explained this issue. As I said I fixed via installing a Flatpak. I've been using Firefox since Firefox 1.0 so have a pretty good idea how it works and had never encountered this issue previously, II only mentioned about it along with the current (now fixed) Tor issue.
To me even though I personally resolved the issue it is still an issue, maybe Zorin Dev team needs informing as I'm thinking that's where the issue lays.

For the Firefox Issue: When You click on the Puzzle Piece, are there Your Add-ons shown?

Because of TOR: Do You have it installed directly from the TOR Project?

No they weren't as stated nor were Multi-Containers, Ublock or NoScrypt available on a mouse right click menu when they should be. I gave up and installed FF as a flatpak and all work perfectly.

I also gave up on the ZorinOS package for Tor and installed Tor as a Flatpak.

When it works now for You, that is fine. But I don't understand why this in Firefox didn't worked ... but okay.

Note. If you had Firefox as a .apt before the move to Brave, you would still have FF as .apt.
@Nirozzz can you confirm your Firefox is indeed a .apt (.deb) source and not a snap. You visit the Software Store>Installed to see which source. Otherwise list your snaps to check if it appears there.

I really do think Firefox should be made available as a .apt in the Software Store to avoid this sort of thing. Not everyone loves Brave browser.

100% it was an .apt/.deb Firefox package as previously stated also it was either from a ZorinOS 17.1 or 17.2 install.
I've thought about this ... I uninstalled it then re-installed now before anyone says "when you re-installed it was a snap" Well I'm pretty sure it wasn't as the Firefox version that re-installed was exactly the same with all the addons/extensions already installed and not working the identical problem.
I have a desktop (along with many of my other possessions) with ZorinOS 17.1 or .2 sitting in a container in SE Asia since the beginning of February 2025, it still hasn't shipped yet grrr it will not have Brave as the default browser until I update the machine when I finally get my hands on it.
