Problems with performance on Zorin os 18 core

I’ve been running into some pretty noticeable performance issues ever since switching to Zorin OS. I never had any of these problems on Ubuntu or Fedora, so I’m trying to figure out what’s going on. My system is running a 5900X and a 7900 XT, so hardware definitely shouldn’t be the bottleneck.

Randomly, different apps will start lagging on the UI side. Hovering over elements causes really slow, choppy animations. Game performance has also been worse than expected. My FPS is technically high, but gameplay feels stuttery, which makes me think my 1% lows are tanking. What’s strange is that this only happens on Zorin.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues or found a fix? Any help is appreciated.

Did you test if it is better when you switch to XOrg? Logout and at login click on your username then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg".

Are secure boot and fast boot in your BIOS disabled (or do you have created a MOK for using Zorin with secure boot enabled)?
Is fast startup in Windows disabled if you have a Dualboot with Windows?

Welcome to the Forum!

Beneath @Forpli's Points, I would think that maybe a newer Kernel could help. Here are Instructions:

Other Things:

  • How are Resolution and Refresh Rate set up?
  • Is Fractional Scaling active?
  • Is Hardware Acceleration in Your Browsers disabled?
  • When You use Steam: Is it installed as Flatpak or .deb File? Maybe try the Version that is directly offered by Steam: Steam, The Ultimate Online Game Platform

Switching to Xorg fixed it entirely. There's some weirdness with trying to record via obs but I found a way around that so I'm happy.
