Programs opening on second monitor despite not being chosen as primary

Hello. Programs default to opening on the upper left quarter of my left (secondary) monitor. The monitor to the right (primary) is designated as such in the settings but programs never open there by default on first launch. Is there a way to make them open on that monitor? So far it hasn't been much of a nuisance but if it's fixable I'd love to be able to change it! :smiley:

Go in terminal and type

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

If it's wayland, switch to Xorg:

  • Logout
  • At the login screen, click your username (don't enter password)
  • Click the gear icon in the bottom right
  • Select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg"
  • Log in

I did a search for this issue using Ubuntu 24.04 in the search criteria as that is what Zorin 18 is based on.

I have seen posts suggesting that it is an issue with mutter wanting to use the desktop with the most free space.

Perhaps the suggestion that solved this issue for someone might help:

Did You checked the Connections on Your Machine how they are numbered? I had a similar Issue in the Past. I discovered that my Ports are Numbered and my ''Primary'' Monitor was connected to the 2nd HDMI Port and my ''Secondary'' Monitor was connected to the 1st Port. And even with setting up the primary Monitor in the Display Settings it didn't worked quite good.

Then, I simply switched the Connections and it worked fine then.

"Feedback" ; I have a Huion tablet that i also use as second monitor. I mostly use Krita and graphical software with it. As i moved Krita at first opening on this second monitor, it will then open on the second screen. I mostly tried on Xorg (i use wayland daily but switch to X11 when needed - it's a nightmare to use this tablet on Wayland). The tablet is connected from HDMI and usb. This works even if i don't use the Huion's drivers)

I think this is probably the issue because my "primary" monitor is marked as 2 in the display settings. I could switch the cables but that's kind of annoying because of how they're routed :confused:

You could use xrandr to change without swapping connections (provided you are using Xorg and not Wayland):

Aren't You able to get at the Back of Your Machine? You only need to switch it there.
