Programs take a long time to open

Programs like Vivaldi, Joplin, and others are taking a long time to open in Zorin OS 17.3 Core. What can I do to fix this and make apps open faster?

Are the Programs .deb/APT Packages, Snaps or Flatpaks? Does Your System run in Wayland or X11? You can check that in Settings>About if You should use Zorin Core (it would be nice if You could add to Your Profile what Zorin Version You use).

I use Wayland, Zorin OS 17.3 Core. And the programs were installed directly from the software store.

Any other programs that you can give examples of? These two have in common that they are both Chromium-based (Joplin is built using the Electron framework, which is basically the kernel of Chromium and derivative browsers).

You could try to disable graphics hardware acceleration to see if that makes any difference in some of these apps. In Vivaldi, for instance:

Try switching to Xorg, and see if that helps. To switch between Wayland and Xorg, you'll have to log out of your account and select the appropriate option at the lower right corner:

Note that you have to log in first to your account, and then logout. You won't see this option if you're starting up the computer or restarting it.

Quick disclaimer: I didn't want to make this post too long, but it's unavoidable when it comes to package formats.

In Linux, there are multiple package formats that you can choose to install applications. Depending on the program, there may be none, one or more available for download in the software store. For example, there are multiple entries for Joplin available:

Unfortunately, deciding which package to install becomes more difficult when we take into account that not all sources are verified:

Even though in this particular case, it looks like this is the author of Joplin, so I'm not sure why it's labeled as such. Which just goes to show the headaches that can arise from the complexity of the package ecosystem in Linux.

My advice: when you see too many options from many sources, head over to the website and see if there are any instructions or preferred installation method, and use that.

In the case of Joplin, they recommend using their installation script:

You'll need to copy this snippet from their website and paste it into your terminal (you can launch it from the applications menu).

Give this one a try and see if that works out fine.

Maybe I understand that wrong but why won't this work on Start-Up or Restart?

I'm not sure, I think it's just because these are per-user settings, but also because these make changes to system files.

I only ask because I don't have this Problem. Whe my PC starts up and I'm on the Login Screen, I can directly switch if I want; I have the Gear Icon. I don't need to log in first and the log out. The same with a Reboot.

This works fine for me as well, but I remember a few instances where logging out was needed. Maybe I'm just too used to this that I haven't noticed if this is still an issue today
