Restart after installation

Hi all
I’m a dinosaur so please be patient. I’m shocked I was able to install Zorin 18 from windows 10 although I did have to watch YouTube.

The installation went ok but I’m unable to restart, it just goes a blank screen. It boots up and shuts down ok just doesn’t restart.

Any suggestions?
Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I assume you mean Restart using the Zorin "start button" option for Restart. I assume you are saying this results in no activity and machine continues running, but the Shutdown option from there does work.

Is this a completely new installation, or have you made any setting changes?

What hardware spec do you have?

Welcome to the Forum!

To ask for Clarity: You have installed Zorin and now You have to reboot after the Installation or Zorin is completely installed and this happens after the whole Installation Process?

This is a new installation.

When it requested to remove flash drive and press enter the screen just went blank and stayed powered on . I pressed to turn off which it did and the powered back on and the installation succeeded.

When I choose to power off it does this but if I choose to select restart it goes blank and doesn’t restart.

Spec
Memory 8.0
Intel pentium 4405U x4
Intel HD Graphics 510 (SKL GT1)
Capacity 1.0 TB

When installing it requested to remove flash drive and press enter the screen just went blank and stayed powered on . I pressed to turn off which it did and the powered back on and the installation succeeded.

When I choose to power off it does but if I choose to select restart it goes blank and doesn’t restart.

So, You did remove the Stick and then pressed Enter, yes? And then it stays on a Black Screen. Let me ask some Questions:

  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • If Windows is still installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
  • Is Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
  • What Tool did You choose to create the Bootstick?

So, You power the Machine off and when You power it on again it starts in Zorin but when You only make a Restart, it doesn't work. Correct?

Yes correct. I had to power it off using the power button.

I’m not sure how to find this to see if disabled.

Windows has been wiped.

How do I find BOIS ?

Refus was used . Yes if I choose power off it will power off and the power button light will go out . If I choose restart the screen will go blank but the power button will remain lit.

Normally, You press a Button on Start-Up to get to BIOS. The Problem is: It isn't unfied. So, what button You have to press depends on Your Machine. Can You post Brand and Model?

Do you see a grub menu screen?
If not, can you try tapping esc or tab furiously when you see the motherboard splash screen to pull up grub menu?

In that menu, you can arrow key to the bottom and select Drop to Root Prompt
From this, add the nomodeset parameter as outlined here:

After saving the file and exiting the editor, remember to run

sudo update-grub

Reboot and test if the screen displays properly.

Thank you but I’ve no idea what a grub menu is .

Okay, not the BIOS but it looks like a Boot Menu. So, we now have at least the Info that Zorin is listed. And it could be in UEFI. When You go to ''Enter Setup'' what happens then?

It brings up BIOS setup utility

Lots of tabs / options

See an example of grub menu here: How to skip Grub Menu?

Do you remember when using Rufus to create your Zorin USB, did you choose GPT (for UEFI BIOS) or MBR (for Legacy BIOS)?
The picture below shows MBR option chosen, but if you have UEFI then GPT should be selected there.

Ah, that sounds not bad. Can You make some Pictures of it?

Ah, yes. That is Your BIOS.

Could You check Devices, Advanced, Security and Startup for Secure Boot, Fast Boot and UEFI/Legacy? If You not sure, make some Pictures of the Menu Points and post it here.
