Here is my problem. This is my old test machine, not in daily use, I use it for experimenting only, so no urgent need to have things fixed. Below my hardware info. It says Mint, but I now have Xubuntu 22.04 and Zorin Core 16.1 on it.
The problem is, when I shutdown, the OS seems to go down nicely, I get a black screen and then I hear the hdd go silent, but the CPU fan is still on, so it does not shutdown completely. Only way to turn it off then is to hold down the power button for five seconds.
Not a huge big deal, but if I intend to use Zorin in the future, would be nice to have it fixed. I've had the same problem with Ubuntu 20.04 and Mint 20.3, but now with Pop! OS 22.04 it shutsdown nicely. I then replaced Pop with Zorin, so I no longer have a way to check what Pop did differently.
So what I'd like to ask is, where to start fixing the problem? Where do I find the logs for the shutdown process?
I've used Linux for ages but that does not mean I know this stuff. Now I'd like to get my hands dirty.
Also my mysterious testing Acer computer has two GPU:s, AMD Sumo and AMD Turks, as shown in the inxi printout, the other one makes the system really slow... Can't move windows and the mouse lags behind, when hdmi is plugged into that. So if graphics drivers are usually the problem, then that other GPU might have to go, since I don't need it. Just a thought, but what the heck do I know...
Edited to add, glxinfo says it's the integrated Sumo GPU that sadly is the one that works, with shared memory, the Turks AMD HD 6570 would have a whopping 2GB of memory, but does not work properly. May be a driver issue again, time for yet another kernel, or it may simple be physically broken. Could look into that as well...
And that graphics driver issues can utterly halt a system shutdown, we may see if that can get resolved, then return to this thread depending on those results...
Removed the other GPU, now the GPU issue is "fixed", but alas, still will not shutdown properly. The logs now say exactly what they said before. So the GPU was not broken, not really doing anything, now I removed it, so I have only the onboard GPU doing its work.
So any ideas what I should try next? Upgrading my test machine is one option, this computer is ancient and might be a good idea to get something with at least 8GB RAM and a decent GPU...
Tried to install LMDE5, but the boot gave a no disk found error, weird... Now I have no OS at all on my test machine. Which is exactly why I have a test machine for trying out new stuff. On my main computer I have Debian 11. Will give Zorin a go again on the test machine but having had these problems, I'm sticking with Debian for now on my main machine.
Yes, Zorin looks very promising, could be just my bad luck that the wifi didn't work, shutdown problem occurs with other distros too it is not that big of deal that you can't flash a usb by righ clicking on the iso image as you can with Mint.
Thank you all! What a great forum. On the Mint forums I am still waiting to get any feedback on my LMDE 5 boot issue.
