Hi, ever since updating my computers to 18.1, I've been running into a multitude of issues with the software updater--namely both computers (running dual boot) have stopped recognizing their Nvidia drivers (which were perfectly functional in Dual Boot with Secure Boot prior to the 18.1 update) as well as the Software Updater having an error on the dash saying "A problem occurred when checking for the updates." which cannot be cleared.
When opening the Software Updater, it will still give me the option to update things, but clicking on "Settings" in the Software Updater no longer opens any additional dialogues. The "Settings" I am referring to is the bottom right option in this screen:
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing these issues or how to fix them?
Edited the original post to include a photo of the dash error mentioned.
have you tryed opening a terminal and typing
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
this may clear any errors and show any troubles

I did attempt this multiple times--I've opted to reinstall Zorin which at least fixed the Software Updater issue but has not resolved the Nvidia driver issues. I'm still at a loss as to what is causing that, as Zonin 18 Core (prior to the 18.1 update) had no issues with the secure boot and Nvidia drivers on both of my computers.
So, You don't have any longer the Problem explained in Your initial Post with it, yes?
Because of the Nvidia Issue: Did You tried it with switching between Wayland and Xorg? Did You tried it with uninstalling the Nvidia driver, then disabling Secure Boot and then install the Nvidia Driver again?
With the software updater--yes, that issue seemed to resolve itself on reinstalling Zorin all over again.
Regarding the Nvidia--I finally got it to cooperate on one of my computers after multiple install, uninstall, flip between Zorin OS Wayland and Zorin OS (at no point has a Xorg option ever shown up on either computer). For the 940MX in my laptop, using the Nvidia 535 driver on Zorin Wayland is what finally worked. I can get the Nvidia card to be recognized on the second computer if Secure Boot is deactivated, but I don't want to have to go and have to enable/disable that through UEFI each time I want to boot into either Zorin or Windows. I'm going to repeat the same trial and error on the second computer later, and I'll relay any further updates I have later.
EDIT: Adding some additional commentary...
I will say, I am at least happy that my Zorin installs don't have a ton of data that I need to preserve at the moment. Main reason I'm running dual-boots is solely because I'm still using a third computer as a testing rig to determine what programs I can fully migrate into a Linux environment from Windows to eventually abandon Microslop altogether if possible. Main obstacles at the moment are music production related programs, but that'll be something I'll tackle on the forms at a later date if I'm unable to resolve it on my own from following tutorials/web searches.
@KrispKestrel Thats the same thing i did 12 months ago duel booted for 3 months to get stuff i needed working then 9 months ago i droped microslop like a bad penny...best move i ever made...im staying here with zorin good folks here helping out and i try to help as well where i can
Alrighty circling back with the solutions--got everything fixed and working again. Below were settings used and driver packages that made it work:
Samsung Notebook 7 Spin (2016 Model, 32GB RAM / SATA III SSD, Nvidia Geforce 940MX):
- Zorin 18 Wayland
- Using driver package nvidia-drivers-535
Desktop (Ryzen 7 5700X, 48GB RAM, Gigabyte B450, Samsung 256GB nVME, Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 TI)
- Zorin 18 Wayland
- Using driver package nvidia-drivers-580
The larger details were reinstalling Zorin (on the desktop, using "sudo apt reinstall zorin-os-desktop" was sufficient to get it to work), purging all Nvidia drivers, sudo apt update/upgrade, then reinstalling the corresponding package using the terminal until I found the driver that was compatible with either Zorin 18 or Zorin 18 Wayland.
EDIT: Added the Nvidia card information for my laptop so that I can hopefully add some better visibility for users experiencing the same issue with the same/similar Nvidia cards.

Yes, that can be irritating. To explain that:
In Your Case the Zorin OS Option is the Xorg Option. Unfortunately this isn't clearly labeled. I'm personally not happy with that. I already wrote Feedback to clearly label both Options.
It seems, You have installed Zorin with Graphics Driver which results in switching the Options to:
- Zorin Desktop (the Xorg Option)
- Zorin Desktop on Wayland (the Wayland Option)
When You would install it without Drivers, the Options would be:
- Zorin Desktop (the Wayland Option)
- Zorin Desktop on Xorg (the Xorg Option)
That only as Information for this. That can be irritating.
