Hello, this is my third time trying zorin, interestingly, it is also my third day with the system, I have a problem with my headphones, for some reason, when I connect the cable to any of my headphones an icon starts flashing on my screen [image 1], when I disconnect it, it stops, I have identified that when I press the media buttons on my keyboard (Play/Pause, Previous Track, and Next Track) it shows the same icon, my headphones don't have specific software or drivers, and the controls for one of them only change the headphones themselves, and don't manage the audio system, I also noticed that when the settings application is open, or any other audio-related program is open, it stops giving this error, I've tried almost everything, but it still doesn't fix it, the audio comes out normal, but with this icon, another thing I noticed is that, if I play a video on YouTube it runs fine, but if I press the pause, about 10 seconds later the video plays by itself, I don't know what the problem could be, I'm looking forward to testing the system but this error is frustrating me a lot.
edit 1: In my other Linux experiences (about 1 year and a half with Kali), this had not happened, as well as in Zorin Os Lite, which was my second test
As soon as I plug in the headset, the icon [] starts flashing at the bottom corner of the screen without me clicking anything. The same icon appears when I press the Play/Pause, Previous Track, and Next Track buttons. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 320, and my headset is an AOC GH 100. It has a button to mute the microphone and a volume wheel, but these only affect the headset itself, the system does not recognize these commands."
I use it in the headphone jack (I'm not exactly sure of the name, but I believe it's the one you mentioned, audio jack). My headset does have a USB output, but it's only for the LED and doesn't affect controls or functionality (I've tested connecting it together, but nothing changed).
I tested it on Windows, and everything seems to work fine; it's only on Linux that the video plays by itself, and that message keeps appearing on the screen. I mentioned Zorin OS Lite, but I didn't test it thoroughly to see if the video started playing on its own, so I don't know if it was working correctly there.
I tested a different interface (XFCE), but the issue persists. I noticed that when PulseAudio is "running," the message disappears. This happens when I open its menu or the sound settings menu. If either of those is closed, it appears as "sleeping," and the icon I showed in the video reappears.
This is literally the only issue preventing me from using the system. Sad.
Then set your proper headphones output using the GUI editor and drop down menu's.
Your system may be stuck trying to default your audio somewhere other than the headphones.
Hello, I already installed PavuControl, but it didn't work, and the settings seemed right, but I'll take a closer look.
Something curious caught my attention while I was researching this problem, I saw Ubuntu users reporting the same thing, and one of them noticed that when he connected the network cable the same icon appeared, I don't know if he managed to solve it.
Yes, this is a "Gnome emulates Microsoft" behavior... A strange "Forbidden Icon" with no readable error message or code that can be used to troubleshoot and diagnose.
At least Windows OS used to give an error "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shot at dawn Error 0000008X"
This likely sounds like a Puselaudio issue, then. If you set the output using Pavucontrol without success, have you tried using Pipewire instead of Pulseaudio?
I confess that yes, but I don't know if I did it right, and in any case I didn't have different results, but of course, maybe I did it wrong.
The strange thing is that if I keep PavuControl or the settings application open (as long as it is in the sound tab), the error disappears, and everything returns to normal. I noticed that in this process PulseAudio appears running in the task manager. But I don't know what that means.
No, I think you did it right.
It sounds to me like Pulseaudio is misreading your headphone jack as an "input Device."
You might be able to see switching between input devices in the logs:
journalctl -f | grep pulseaudio
If it is, you can try disabling automatic switching on connect by creating a user defined configuration file in ~/.config/pulse/default.pa and saving the file with the contents: load-module module-switch-on-connect
I didn't have the problem when using Kali, maybe it's something related to Ubuntu, since Mint is also based on it and it also had problems with the audio settings.
I'll test what you sent me tomorrow. It's quite late where I live. I hope this works, I really liked Zorin, anyway thanks for the support, I'll be back tomorrow with more updates.
The flashing will be down to the fact that it senses your single headphone jack also carries the microphone signal. I gave my eldest the keyboard mouse and headset I had bought for myself and that was for a pc tower and needed an extension cable as well as front ports weren't working correctly so had to go to rear outputs. Was looking on Amazon to see if I could find one with 3 rings on the jack plug as I think you would need one like that. 3 rings means it is TRRS. And fortunately the fiance had such a splitter.
I was ready to come here and tell you you were wrong, but I wasted 3 days trying to get this to work so... what's one more test? and to my surprise... Everything went back to normal (I was like: WHAT???) my headset came with this adapter, but I would never have thought that adding it would solve the problem.
I don't know if there is a way to fix this by software or command so I don't need to use the cable, but anyway this will work.
Thank you swarfendor437, this solved my problem, and thank you Aravisian and Ponce-De-Leon for trying to solve it.
