SOLVED: Tonight's update broke all apps

SOLVED: This morning (18th of september) there was a 51 Kb update to Zorin OS 18.1 that fixed the issue.

Tonight the software updater came up. There were a handful of files to be updated.

So I did that.

Now nothing works.

The system starts. I can launch the terminal and other simple apps.

But anything from the app store won't launch. Browsers, Libre Office etc.

What Updates did You receive? Are the Apps installed as Flatpaks or APT Packages? Did You tried a Reinstall?

I have just posted about this in another thread, though thankfully for me it only affected 2 flatpacks: Tauon and Thunderbird. What a MESS......

Mods: you might want to merge the threads?

I am not a mod but suggest they are not merged as there might be other issues.

@soren_ladegaard was there a kernel update or just app updates? If this is happening for numerous people, can @AZorin and @zorink please take a look?

@soren_ladegaard if this is a 'snap' package (even if you thought you were installing the APT version, Ubuntu has been hijacking such installs and turning them into snap installs. So I searched using Ubuntu 24.04 in my search criteria as that is what Zorin 18.x is based on:

" Firefox failing to launch on Ubuntu 24.04 after updates is typically caused by snap package synchronization issues , missing desktop environment components , or GPU wrapper conflicts .

  • Snap Refresh : The most common fix is to manually refresh snap packages and reboot. Run sudo snap refresh in the terminal, then restart your system.

  • Reinstall Desktop : If the GUI or applications fail to start after an update, reinstall the core desktop environment by running sudo apt install --reinstall zorin-desktop^ followed by a reboot.

  • Snapd and AppArmor : If you encounter errors like snap-confine is packaged without necessary permissions , reinstall snapd and enable its service:

sudo apt install --reinstall snapd
sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.apparmor.service
  • GPU Wrapper Issues : If updates to Mesa or the Firefox snap cause the browser to hang, ensure the gpu-2404-provider-wrapper is accessible. If the wrapper is missing or snapd fails to handle content provider refreshes, reinstalling the Firefox snap (sudo snap install --channel=latest/stable firefox ) may resolve the conflict.

Note I changed the command to reinstall ubuntu-desktop to the zorin one - we would not want your Zorin install turning into Ubuntu.

I am crosslinking a thread where this is being discussed, as it answered what has happened.
