Strange inconsistency between two Zorin installs

Possibly a very silly question, but it's been bugging me.

I've installed Zorin 18 Core on my two laptops. On one machine Zorin permits me to select the following options during login (via the little gear icon):

  • Zorin Desktop
  • Zorin Desktop on Wayland

On the other laptop, the same login screen has:

  • Zorin Desktop
  • Zorin Desktop on Xorg

Why are the options different when both installs are Zorin 18 Core? Why does one show Wayland by "default", and the other "Xorg" by default?

Do you have two different video card brand?

Yes - on one laptop I have an Intel CPU with integrated graphics and a secondary Nvidia GPU. Is this the reason?

Yes, for modern nvidia cards automatically Xorg is set as default when you install the nvidia drivers. Otherwise Wayland is the default.

May I ask why? Because when I was doing some game testing on that dual-GPU laptop it was Wayland that actually permitted a game to start, where the process locked up on X11.

The most nvidia cards work better with Xorg - but some not. It depends on the hardware you have. The best is to try both and keep the better one.
Some programs, e.g. screen sharing, screenshot tools don't work well with Wayland, then it is good when you can switch.

Don't you think it might be a bit confusing to have these two login options... be different across the same Zorin install? I can certainly see why one option would be picked over the other under certain conditions, like you wrote, but I'm really baffled why the two options would be flipped in position and label.

Yes, I agree, that is really confusing for new users and is quite new; it wasn't like that before a year ago.
It would be much better if both options had the full name
'Zorin Desktop on Xorg'
'Zorin Desktop on Wayland'
and all users had the same default display server protocol. So we first have to ask every time when we advice someone and we can no longer clearly say to select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg" (or Wayland) because some users need to select "Zorin Desktop" and others need to select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg" (for Wayland accordingly).

This was often suggested the Zorin group - but with no effect, they didn't changed it.
