Zorin 18 PRO on a HP Elitebook 840 G1 laptop. It booted and ran fine last night outside of the usual wandering configuration but when I try to boot it up today it gets stuck. I've forced it off several times and retried, even tried a battery pull. Sometimes it gets stuck with the glowing "Z" logo at the bottom of the screen, sometimes when the "ZORIN" is spelled out. HDD activity light flashes every few seconds, that's the only sign of life. The BIOS hardware checks come back clean. It's sitting now at the "Z" logo, has been for almost 30 minutes. Any thoughts on how to get past this point?

- Is this a fresh Installation?
- Is this a Dual-Boot System?
- Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
- If Windows is still installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
- If You should have a GRUB Menu choose ''Advanced Options'' and start in an older Kernel
- What Tool did You use to create the Bootstick?
- Is Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
Good afternoon, thanks for the speedy response. In general, this was a clean install onto an unpartitioned HDD about a month ago and it's a dedicated Zorin box. I selected all defaults during the install. Once I got it to boot to start with, it's been booting every day.
I have not been in BIOS at all since I got it to boot in the first place.
In order then:
Fresh install: It's about a month old, has been booting every day.
Dual boot: No.
Secure Boot is enabled, Fast Boot is disabled.
Windows is not installed.
No Grub menu, it usually boots straight into Zorin from power on after displaying a BIOS based boot menu.

BIOS is in UEFI mode, "UEFI Native (Without CSM)"
Please disable secure boot, save your BIOS config, then reboot the system. Secure Boot is a Windows only feature, has no benefit in Linux, and actually often causes issues on Linux.
I just changed that per your suggestion, no change in the problem.
I don't know if this is new or I just hadn't noticed it, but it starts to boot Zorin, I get the black screen with the "Z" logo towards the bottom (as it has been), then the screen blinked off for a split second and when it came back, same thing but at maybe 70% brightness. Now it's stuck there again, with flicker of HDD activity every 3-4 seconds. It's entirely possible it's been doing that all along and I hadn't noticed it.
Why would that suddenly cause problems after almost a month of booting no problem with the BIOS as is?
Possible system update? Thats what caused issues with a POP OS installation before. We always recommend turning off Secure Boot with Linux however. If it fixes your situation, awesome. If it doesn’t, then will need log data on all recent updates.
That's the problem, or two of them.
One: There have been no updates since the last known good configuration. I haven't been allowing software updater to run since the initial bootup about 4 weeks ago until I get the system stabilized and I haven't installed any software or changed any config in the last several days. It booted no problem Thursday evening and I shut it down normally at the end of the night. Friday afternoon (next startup) it started failing to boot. No error messages, nothing out of the ordinary at all that I can see outside of it getting stuck.
Two: Kinda hard to get ANY sort of log data if it won't boot.
This is where it's currently sitting. The glow effect on the logo is pulsating if that tells you anything.
One Thing could be the Kernel. When you System runs in Kernel 6.17, it would be worth a Try to switch to the older 6.14 Kernel.

Secure Boot is definetely a Point. But when You already have disabled it ...
When You press here the Esc-Key does it change and You see Lines of Code?

today I had a kernel update to 6.17.0-19, it could be a problem, you are right, he can try 6.14.

Update: The saga continues...
Tonight it's starting successfully without making any changes at all from last night's failure to start. My taskbar settings have changed themselves and are ignoring the settings, detailed in another post. I still have not allowed any system updates since the original installation.
Then, You could try to switch to Kernel 6.14.
