Subject: Severe battery drain while laptop is completely powered off after August 26 update

Hello,

I am very disappointed with the August 26, 2026 update.

I use a ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 AMD. Before this update, when the laptop was fully charged and completely powered off, the battery could remain for more than three weeks with only a small discharge.

On August 26, the system was updated from Linux kernel 7.0.0-29 to 7.0.0-30

After the update, I charged the laptop to 100%, completely shut it down, unplugged the charger, and left absolutely nothing connected to it. USB charging is also disabled in the BIOS.

Five days later, the battery was completely empty: 0%.

The battery itself appears to be healthy:

  • Current capacity: 44.89 Wh
  • Design capacity: 46.5 Wh
  • Battery health: 96.5%
  • Charge cycles: 36

The laptop was completely powered off, not suspended.

This is a very significant regression compared with the behavior before the August 26 update.

The previous kernel 7.0.0-29 is still installed, so this may be useful for troubleshooting and comparison.

Please investigate whether the August 26 update, particularly kernel 7.0.0-30, introduced a problem related to ACPI, embedded controller power management, or battery drain while the laptop is powered off.

I would appreciate an investigation and, if this is a confirmed regression, a fix or workaround.

boot the old kernel first. grub → advanced options → 7.0.0-29, charge to 100, full shutdown, unplug, leave it a couple days. if it holds, its 7.0.0-30.

you can pin 7.0.0-29 as the grub default while that kernel is still installed.

also check it is actually shutting down. power led fully off, not breathing. thinkpads sit in s2idle and people think its off. if the led is doing anything its not s5.

bios: wake on lan off, thunderbolt sleep off. you already killed usb charging.

fwupdmgr get-updates for the ec/bios. amd l15s have had ec drain bugs that only show up on newer kernels.
