Sunsetting Zorin Lite a Crying Shame in Face of "RAMpocolypse"

Im sure the 18 lite will be supported till its end of life.....no worries there..... :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The fact is that some things didn't work properly, for example, on my laptop.
Maybe it's different with external keyboards. The issues with moving windows have existed since Zorin 17 Lite and earlier; they're known and have been reported, but haven't been fixed. Also, some of the shortcut functions for window navigation don't work at all.

Xcape isn’t configured properly; it worked better in Zorin 17 Lite. Maybe that’s been fixed in the meantime, but when I installed Zorin 18.1 Lite on my desktop and wanted to use the shortcuts as setup by default andcshown in the settings app, it didn’t work correctly.
There were also issues with some launchers, such as About Xfce. I'm not sure if it was a problem of Zorin menu.

Some other users reported inconsistencies in the system, too. It was not just my personal impression.

These were minor issues, not serious ones, you might not even notice them if you don’t use those features, but I had to tinker around a bit to get some things working.

Thank you all for your input. Though, I do remember someone saying that they couldn’t even shut down and reboot normally (or something similar). I did read through a few posts….

I’m going to give it a whirl and see how I get on. I’ll report back later, when I’m set up and running. I can always reinstall 18.1, with an older kernel, if things don’t work out.

Here is another possible alternative:

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

Looks very interesting!

While that (6 year old) article pointing out the lack of UEFI support without a complicated "hack" setup is worrying, it looks like that's changed now, according to the wiki:

https://wiki.linuxliteos.com/en/home#uefi

If you bought the computer/motherboard after 2010, chances are you have a UEFI system. If you are still unsure, download the UEFI version as it will also detect and run on a BIOS-Legacy computer. If you have an older, legacy type BIOS computer don't worry, Linux Lite will still detect this and install on your computer.

Except on the download page, there is only one version; no sign of a "UEFI version".

Looking at the gallery on the Lite OS website, unfortunately for me they're leaning hard into gnome / gtk / libadwaita UI design paradigms which I hate. Hopefully that's easy to completely obliterate and switch to something that is actually usable and looks good, because their wiki does say they're still using Xfce rather than actual gnome and they include a theme manager app.

Also, just noticed it has a pre-installed AI assistant of some kind... 1) eww, and 2) LLMs aren't very "lite".

Thank you so much, @Ultrabenosaurus, I was a bit worried when I saw the article was written in 2020! The laptop isn't that old, it just has budget specifications. I didn't have time to go further into newer info because I was teaching, then I went for a bike ride, so you've saved me a lot of hassle.

Ultimately, I really hope the Zorin Brothers will reconsider their stance on Zorin Lite. The tech environment has changed drastically, and we'll be feeling the pinch for years to come. I think Lite is going to become even more relevant, not less, over the next few years.

From what I understand after having seen interviews with the developers of Zorin because they are essentially a two person team they have to simplify their product line.

Zorin 18 is almost two years behind the development cycle of Ubuntu which it is based upon.

In order to catch up they need to focus their efforts. And as a result they are killing Zorin Lite in 2029.

Seems fair enough to me.

I can understand the OP's frustration since they were used to Zorin OS lite product which is being discontinued but the Zorin Brother quite frankly are not being very honest about Zorin Core OS being able to run on hardware with low specs. The Zorin OS 18 core installation on my computer using Google Chrome with 1 YouTube tab with a video paused and the second tab on this website is using around 6.5GB of memory. So anybody with computer hardware with less than 8GB of memory is going to be constantly memory swapping and creating a large Swap File. If they are using a mechanical hard drive instead of a solid state drive it is only going to make the performance noticeably worse. I think the Zorin brothers honestly should have listed alternative Linux distributions aimed at low spec hardware than make misleading claims that are going to frustrate users.

That is a fair point but at the same time the Zorin brothers should not make out right misleading statements like Zorin Core OS will be able to run on very low spec hardware which their discontinued Zorin Lite product was designed for. It would have been better if they listed other Linux distributions that are actively making versions designed for low spec hardware.

I am less sure about it being a fair point.

The ZorinGroup has remained the same size since founding and has consistently put forth:
Core, Lite, Education, and a Premium version.

For Seventeen Years.

Now, all of the sudden, the edition that is so like stock Xubuntu, it is hard to tell the difference is too much work? Implausible.

The most likely reason is because they want to focus User Experience on Wayland, Gnome and Flatpak.

That would make sense since that seems to be the direction Linux is headed anyway except Canonical being different with SNAPS.

In terms of going with Wayland I think this is partly down to the fact that they don't have much choice as they are using a distro that went with Wayland and puts it front and centre at login.
With the number of issues that this forum has dealt with as a result of poor experience with Wayland, Team Zorin should have made an announcement that:

a. Zorin now defaults to Wayland and

b. If you are having issues with graphical interface, how to change to 'Zorin on xorg' for new users under something like 'Notes to be aware of prior to installation and post install steps where issues arise.

I also think they should be more upfront about Flatpak adoption whicch potentially adds bloatware.

Lastly APT should not have had Zorin put in front of it as it has been around a lot longer than Team Zorin and in doing that it is not readily visible as adding Zorin puts it alphabetically in the wrong place.

I do think in the past there were more than just Artyom and Kyrill.

Having said that, one individual, 'TheeMahn' put out a stonking amount of different DE's for Ultimate Edition, which sadly have been torched by hackers.

They have accepted contributions, yes. That is not the same as formally expanding the team.
One of the most prolific was Unit 103 who supplied mostly XFCE packages for Zorin OS Lite.

But that is not how it works. It doesn't have an alphabetical Sort. In Debian it is named ''Debian'' too and when You add Flatpak Support, Flatpak stands on first Position. And it begins with an F.

I've not been able to log in for a few days as I've had some extra work which requires both of my Windows laptops to be upstairs, in my office, and has taken up quite a lot of time.

I did try to log in earlier using the HP, running Zorin Core (just have not had the time or inclination to change over to Lite) but I can't even open a browser. I'm not asking for a solution, I will try Lite, if it's an awful experience, I'll try rolling back to an older kernel.

I do get what those of you who think I'm either being unrealistic, or maybe even a bit selfish, are saying... to ask the brothers to reconsider ditching Lite is probably pointless, BUT things have changed a lot in recent months, a heck of a lot, and this has caused other companies to change track, ideas and many other things that were not in their plans.

Ultimately if you don't ask, you don't get! I do understand that I'm very unlikely to succeed, however, if a lot of people are also suffering, and those people are forced to leave Zorin_OS because it's too power or resource hungry, that is not doing them any favours either, especially when they make the claims they do!

So, be honest! Change the required specs to reflect the current state of affairs and stop giving false hope. That not only reflects badly on Zorin_OS but also on Linux, especially as Zorin is attracting new users, especially those whose devices can't run Windows 11. Now, maybe not Zorin 18.1 Core either!

Thank you to everyone who has responded, whatever your opinion - each one is valid and you have a right to share it.

As far as I understood your laptop has no real dual slot - means 2 slots but counted and access as one slot, so you do not need two equal same size DDR4 RAM riegel for the best performance.

If you would buy used for example by ebay it could be less expensive:
1x 8GB DDR4 RAM SO-DIMM 2133MHz riegel (or even 2x 8GB)

With 1x 8GB DDR4 RAM SO-DIMM 2133MHz riegel
you would have then 12GB RAM (4GB in one slot 8GB in second slot) and less stress.

Anyhow the Zorin Lite version would be helpful anyhow as there is a lot of older hardware and less RAM: many stranded and left behind from MS Windows. I hope that this special situation brings the Zorin Lite support will be prolonged than 2029.

I can't remember where I bought RAM for the Dell Notebook that my manager gifted me. It was either eBay or Amazon.

Thank you SOOOOoooo much for doing all of that research to help me out, I appreciate it more than you know! I'm up to my neck in things at the moment, but as soon as things settle down I'll get stuck into dealing with this properly.

Ebay is no longer an option for me, thanks to PayPal. I deleted my account years ago. I actually don't know anyone who uses it here in Spain, and getting stuff shipped in from the UK is a no-no since Brexit.
