I found an article on Zorin Help which says that I can run Windows apps because Windows support software is a part of Zorin OS. But, when I downloaded an application .exe file and tried to run it, it said that this app cannot run on Windows 10. This tells me that ZorinOS 17.3 only supports up to Win10. How do I upgrade this to Windows 11 support?
Can You post a Screenshot of this?
This is a decision TurboTax made which has caught the ire of many Windows users, as well.
Have you tried using the WebApp for the online version of TurboTax, instead?
Yeah Turbo Tax is a PITA, I've found both Turbo Tax AND Quicken refuse to run on Linux using WINE. There is no solution at all. I am looking GNUCash as a quicken replacement. TurboTax online is the only solution for that. Neither of the are the fault of Linux, Zorin or WINE in my humble opinion.
The only option to running either if these is to Dual Boot (YUCK) or run a Windows VM. Not worth being locked into paying for MS account just to run those two apps. I refuse to pay MS any more subscription fees for anything myself.
Cheers
You can run a Win11 VM using QEMU / KVM, then you bypass all Wine related issues.
See this blog article how to install (in german, pls use Google Translator):
I appreciate above responses. But:
- I am aware of Web based Turbotax and other tax sites
- I am aware of VM and I am running it on my Zorin
Neither of the above options are what I want to use.
My question is specifically about using Wine to run an app which wants Windows11.
Even though my Bottle is set to be compatible with Windows11, Turbotax seems to detect it as Win10.
Any constructive suggestions in this direction greatly appreciated.
Thanks
@Aravisian has already covered this base. I think there was a similar post a month or so ago and think they got quicken to work but TurboTax will never work due to the way TurboTax has been written ... period.
Wanting and getting are not mutually exclusive.
I think this needs some clarity.
This is not a simple version number issue, though I can see why the message displayed by TurboTax would lead you to believe that.
TurboTax does not check Windows version based on a file number. Instead, it runs a series of API and DRM checks that if unsatisfied, assume that you are using Windows 10. It operates not on branding, but on system requirements.
TurboTax relies on this environment because it handles regulated financial data and is subject to fraud and compliance constraints.
WINE cannot be made to run TurboTax, even if you could manage to emulate and spoof TPM, Secure Boot, Windows kernel integrity guarantees and Hardware root-of-trust APIs, because TurboTax is built to not be spoofed.
Intuit considers WINE to be a high risk environment because it works around many of their own anti-fraud assumptions. Not due to WINE being malicious, but due to it being a mere compatibility layer, and not a running instance of Windows Operating System.
This is an internal Policy Decision by the developers of TurboTax.
Factual Suggestions are as important as constructive ones and assuming that a factual answer is not constructive because it does not get you what you want is errant.
This makes sense and clearly explains why I can't run Turbotax on my Zorin PC.
Just FYI, since other suggestions were brought up:
- WebApp - storing my personal and financial data on any cloud means relying on their security and I have doubts, having it all on my desktop - i'm in full control
- Dual boot - my PC cannot run Windows11 - too old, that's why I switched to Zorin
- VM - it is an option and I may pursue it, but puts serious pressure on my PC which is not powerful CPU
I posted the above only as FYI to respond to prior suggestions, though they were unrelated to my question.
I might as well just try some other packages, eg. H&H, which says it needs Windows 10 or later.
Again, thank you very much!
These are both good and valid reasons to avoid those options.
It is unpleasant to be locked in, in such things.
When handling finances in this modern world, it does often necessitate painful steps to protect yourself.
And this is why their demand of Windows 11 caused irate Windows OS users, as well.
If it was me... I would look for a different service. While I can understand TurboTax prioritizing security, there are ethical and practical give and take considerations in that.
